Just back from Ireland - disappointed
A Polish friend has just come back from spending some time in Ireland trying to perfect her English - she already spoke it really well, having taken it to MA level in Warsaw.
Her reflections on the Irish are all pretty negative. A good line in small talk, followed by total rejection on grounds of nationality. This was repeated ad infinitum in social contacts.
She's going to try London next, as she's got some Polish friends there. Also, she's hoping that as a metropolis London will be friendlier to her as a foreigner than the provincial backwater that is Dublin.

The Irish are just getting fed up with the massive invasion. Benefits are better in Ireland.

i'm just back from NI and reports of Poles in the neighbourhood were mostly positive.
I didn't meet any in social situations but there are other reasons for that 
with regard to Dublin could it be that there aren't any Irish people living there any more ?

Another thing she said was that she was told repeatedly by Dubliners about how the North was going to eventually fall under Southern control, and not before time.
She found that weird too. Like as if Poles were dreaming of marching on Lvov.

Did you hear the suggestion by some politician that the south switch to driving on the right because of the number of accidents caused by Poles and other Eastern Europeans. Crazy.

there are those who'd say they drive all over the road at the best of times so why restrict them to the right?

So drivers would drive to the border with Northern Ireland and then switch to the left!?! Crazy and stupid.

Equally crazy is driving through the channel tunnel and switching to the right....

It's nt at all similar. People don't drive through the Channel Tunnel and Britain and Ireland are islands.

In 1967 Sweden was the last European country to change side of the road. Worth noting is that more Austrians died in 1938 as a result of changing the side of the road (ordered by the Nazi’s) than by any military actions of Anschluss. Nazi’s also changed the rules for Czechoslovakia and Hungary.
Half of the Canadian Provinces switched sides in the 1920’s but not on the same date. In Nova Scotia 1923 is known as the “year of free beef”. Newfoundland was last in 1949, when it joined Canada.

On Austria ...
the village we went to has a memorial to their "Helden" who met their deaths mainly on the Eastern Front.
