Welcome to the original English language Poland and Polish discussion group board. This message forum is a place where English-speaking Poles, foreigners (expats) living in Poland, and anyone with a genuine interest in Poland can discuss and read the views of others concerning Poland. Subjects include: Polish news and current affairs; Life in Poland; politics; genealogy research; Polish culture and history; advice and tips on visiting Poland; Polish property and investment issues. The aim of our group is to increase awareness of wonderful Poland using the English language and allow and foster the honest debate and exchange of opinions on anything vaguely related to Poland and Polish - positive, negative and/or neutral! This discussion group is not an open-to-all public message board. Membership is by invitation only and therefore given that a fairly limited number of people have full access, it is more of a community blog than a straightforward forum. This application system was brought in to lessen the amount of spam and nonsensical and commercial posts made by casual visitors and off-topic and offensive posts left by a disruptive minority. To ask  a one-off question about Poland or respond to comments made on this board without a password just email us and provided it is at least halfway sensible, we'll post it on the board for all to see and current members will try to respond! All opinions and views expressed on this site are solely those of their respective authors and are not necessarily those of anyone else!

Polish foreign aid to reach $46 mln

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-02/27/content_7682149.htm

Poland has earmarked a total of 110million zlotys (about 46 million
U.S. dollars) for various forms of external aid, local media reported
on Wednesday.

They will be directed to, among others, Ukraine, Georgia,
Moldova, Afghanistan, Tanzania, Angola and Palestine, according to
Polish news agency PAP.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski presented on Wednesday
the priorities of Poland's foreign aid. Belarus will be the largest
beneficiary of Poland's foreign aid this year, which will receive 26
million zlotys (about 10.9 million dollars) in aid as part of this
country's foreign aid program.

Iraq as of this year ceases to be a priority country due to an
increased level of threat to people implementing such aid in that
country. However, the minister assured that this does not mean that
Iraq will be cut off from such aid.

Aid for Afghanistan will reach 8.5 million zlotys (about 3.6
million dollars), out of which 6 million is to be directed to
government administration.

Minister Sikorski stressed that thanks to such aid Poland
contributes to the stabilization of its international environment and
develops economic contacts with the beneficiaries.

Many fine people have made a good living scrounging off Europe!

Meaningless propaganda.

If I'm not mistaken Poland received well in excess of €11 billion in handouts from the EU between 2004-2006 and continues to soak up huge handouts from western and northern Europe.

And for our American friends $1,000 is equal to just €650!

Not true!
In forward contracts it's worth about EUR 2.50 ...

Republican spend spend spend policies have bankrupted the US, but things'll get better soon-ish.

Anyway, Americans don't go on holiday much. Always working - and they are so geographically isolated in their virtual island over there.

I almost feel sorry for them.

“If I'm not mistaken Poland received well in excess of €11 billion in handouts from the EU between 2004-2006 and continues to soak up huge handouts from western and northern Europe”

It is actually 3 times that amount. In any case, EU’s policy has always been economic development of less economically viable new member states. Therefore: Ireland, one of the poorest Western nations in 1986 (upon joining EU) is now a powerhouse. Spain, Portugal, and Greece (poor and backward, relative to other member states upon becoming EU members) have benefited greatly from the EU policies.

Calling these funds “handouts” is ill-informed and disingenuous. Poland will be forced to pay these funds back eventually, but history has proved the EU experiment to work.

“And for our American friends $1,000 is equal to just €650!”

Yeah, traveling in Poland now is no different than traveling in US. Same hotel/meal prices in Krakow, Warsaw, and Gdansk. Decent real estate is still slightly cheaper, but not by much. The East Side (Polska C) is still pretty cheap though.

“Anyway, Americans don't go on holiday much. Always working - and they are so geographically isolated in their virtual island over there.”

An island?? Surely ye jest…the US is far more diverse than Europe. Always has been. And yes, we work harder, so what? American culture is all about self-reliance not expecting someone else or the government to do everything for you.

Yeah…Just wait until (hopefully it won’t happen) Clinton or Obama start implementing their socialist visions.

Not supposed to be taken seriously ...
