Last month the West State Archaeological Society had their monthly meeting in Tampa. The guest speaker was the Director of Archaeology for Odyssey and Ellen Gerth, author of "Bottles From The Deep." The subject was the "China Wreck" located 100 miles west of Daytona Beach. Odyssey found this wreck in 2002 and did a survey. They offered it to archaeologists. The archies refused (too expensive). In 2004 they went back over the wreck and noticed it was almost destroyed by trawler nets. They decided to rescue the artifacts. Odyssey salvaged the ceramics at their own expense and identified the wreck as a 19th century coastal trader. The ceramics were dated as 1810 common dishware. All the artifacts are on display at Odyssey's museum and not one single artifact has been sold! DON'T TELL ME THAT ODYSSEY DOESN'T COLLECT SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE! If they didn't rescue that vessel there would be nothing left! Texas A&M knew where that other wreck (the Republic) was located off the coast of Georgia so why didn't THEY go out there themselves? If we leave the recovery of historic shipwrecks up to the non-profit institutes, there will be nothing left to recover! |
