Below are some pictures I’ve put up of an intact, pristine, 2 masted wooden schooner discovered in Lake Erie. An oil lantern was recovered from this wreck, which was dated 1690. Of course that didn't tell us the actual age of the ship, but it may be an indication of just how old it is.
More dives are scheduled this week to help identify this pristine wreck, which could be one of the oldest in the Great Lakes. The ship's open hatches are filled with cargo, which is covered under about a foot of loose silt and cannot as yet be identified. The large rudder of this 80’ plus vessel sits at 176 feet and the bottom temperature is a balmy 35 degrees. Just think, minus three more degrees and we would have needed ice picks instead of flippers.
Admiralty attorney Peter Hess has already arrested the ship for Northeast Research, LLC who is now the Salvor in Possession. We are also working with the S.S. Canadiana Preservation Society and Phoenix Scuba of Lackawanna N.Y.
This Thursday, Peter Hess and I will return to the wreck and try to get more photographic documentation that might help identify it. Our last dive in May resulted in some Hi-Def video that I will put up for all to see in the near future. More pictures and information will follow.
