Long after Johnny Depp sails off into the Caribbean box office sunset, people will still be talking and writing about the ol’ salts that many of these movies are modeled after. One such legendary luminary is Bert Kilbride- treasure hunter and explorer extraordinaire.
Bert has had a lifetime of lifetimes. At ninety-four, it seems Bert has decided to retire. From exploring? Hell No! There’s no room in Berts persona to prevent him from ever doing that. Bert is now taking on the biggest exploration of his life, and his loving and faithful wife of 20 years, Gayla, is right by his side, holding his hand offering the insight and encouragement found only in that intimate relationship between two human beings. All the while regaling him with stories of their life of adventure together.
Bert is comfortable, although sedated to lessen the pain that surges through his weary bones, his consciousness fades in and out but the glimmer in his eyes, when open, tell Gayla that all is well, and that he is ready.
My conversation with Bert’s wife an hour ago painted me that picture. She is strong, loving and pragmatic. She appreciates her time spent with this legendary figure… but more so, Bert appreciates her care and lifelong commitment to him. Bert’s “Saba Rock” exploits, as world famous as they were, could not compare to the “Rock” Gayla was to him throughout their relationship.
At this writing, 9:55 pm, Bert is still with us. His Hospice doctors have given him just a few more days. Gayla reads to him from their online “Guestbook” which allows people to say their goodbyes to Bert. If you’d like to say a few words, here is that link -http://bertkilbride.com/guestbook.html
If you would like to know a little more about Bert Kilbride and his adventures, below is another link that tells of his life. Bert, like many of our other pioneers in shipwreck recovery are becoming a rare breed. But we will never forget them!………. Sail On Bert!
