HISTORIC OCEAN WRECK BRINGS CONTROVERSY IN

THE GUERRERO PROJECT
Available on DVD on Feb. 23, 2008

HOLLYWOOD, CA Feb. 23, 2008 - In 1827 the Spanish pirate slave ship Guerrero sank off the Florida Keys while being pursued by a British warship. Forty-one African prisoners died in the wreck. The shipwreck and the survivors’ arduous two-year journey home frame a maritime mystery lost for nearly two centuries. Recently re-discovered, the story of the Guerrero and the possibility of finding the wrecksite is fascinating historians and treasure hunters, who speculate it could be one of the most significant underwater finds of the century.
Now The Guerrero Project documentary revisits the tragic story of the sunken slave ship in a tapestry of modern-day marine expeditions, heated archaeological debate and gritty examination of race relations in America. An official selection in six film festivals, including the 2008 San Diego Black Film Festival, The Guerrero Project is available exclusively through Black Bay Entertainment, online at www.theguerreroproject.org. The DVD is priced at $19.95.
Using dramatic recreations, expert interviews and existing accounts of the incident, director Karuna Eberl dives headfirst into this lost piece of history. As an enthralling account of the original drama unfolds, Eberl follows a group of modern day treasure hunters and academics searching for the elusive Guerrero.
From the independent historian who has dedicated more than a decade to uncovering the saga of the Guerrero to African American scuba divers hoping to discover the wreck and knowledge about their ancestry, Eberl’s subjects weave a gripping and emotional tale of the infamous Middle Passage from Africa to the New World, and what finding such a ship means to our society today.
“When we began filming the documentary, the Guerrero’s importance became very clear,” says Eberl. “The tragedy and triumph of those aboard the ship and those searching for it today transcend race, education, geography and motive. It’s not just a story with importance to African Americans, but to all people — the Guerrero’s history and implications encompass our humanity and our American and global societies as a whole, whether we know it or not.”
Produced by Black Bay Entertainment in association with Blue Cactus Pictures, The Guerrero Project marks the directorial debut of Karuna Eberl, who also co-edited the film with Bob Aubrey. Veteran actor James Avery narrates The Guerrero Project, and serves as the film’s executive producer. Producers are Karuna Eberl, James McLean and Chris Moore. Director of photography is Tarina Reed. Original music is by Brett Boyett. Distributed by Black Bay Entertainment, www.blackbayentertainment.com. Copyright 2005, The Guerrero Project LLC.
