Pirates, shipwrecks and sea rescues at Heritage Week in Waterford, Ireland.
Waterford County Council organised a number of exciting events around the County for Heritage Week.
It started with a bilingual exhibition: "From Salvage to Salvation",....Exploring the history of Shipwrecks, Salvage and Sea Rescue in County Waterford at St. Declan’s Hall in Ardmore on Aug. 27th.
Children were able to write their own “Articles of Agreement”, the rules for a pirate company.
On Aug. 29th, the citizens of Tramore were on their guard as men from the British Navy were on the lookout for likely candidates to “press gang” and haul off for unwilling service in the Royal Navy.
Among the ‘witnesses’ that presented themselves on Main Street, Tramore at 4pm to view events and lend assistance to her fellow citizens, was the Town Mayor, Anne Marie Power.
Mary Sleeman gave a talk "See the Sea" on Lighthouses, Beacons and Signal Towers on Aug. 29th. There was also an exhibition of "See the Sea" throughout Heritage Week at Tramore Coastguard Station.
Finally, on Sept. 2nd “The Big Dig” took place from 2-5pm at Rainbow Hall, Kilmac-thomas. “The Big Dig” was a chance for children to dig out some of Waterford’s past in a simulated archae-ological dig and unearth artefacts and hidden treasure. There was also an opportunity to see how spearheads were made and to learn how to write in "Ogham". |
