There are a number of hard core archo 'purists' out there who already consider legitimate salvage as Piracy Carla, so there is no pleasing everyone I guess. But to be more specific on your question without knowing what State your in, I would say rule of thumb is to get an Admiralty claim on the wreck ASAP.
As you probably know this requires recovering an object from the wreck to have it formerly “arrested”. Your application need only to say that it is from an “Unidentified Wreck.” Because of the centuries of encrustation accumulated on the artifact that I KNOW MUST be there (right Carla), it is virtually impossible to determine the origin of vessel it sunk with until further restoration, conservation and research can be carried out.
However, if you’re in State waters you must first check that State’s regulations on recovering shipwreck material. In most cases the wording is something like, “…it is prohibited to move, remove, recover or disturb in any way (including hand fanning) any cultural heritage from state waters without first obtaining a permit from the State to do so.” It’s worded a little more restrictively in legalize than that, but that gives you an idea.
Because of Spain’s interference in OUR cultural heritage, I’m afraid that there just will not be any more Spanish ships located that we’ll hear about any more.- Pity. |
