Carla, being dazed and confused is a big part of who we are, sometimes, just in the shear nature of what we do. I guess it's just a matter of how many times you think you can keep pickin' yourself up and trying again. And yes, what we do certainly IS a head game that not many people really understand let alone want to pursue as a carreer.
The area that your working puts you smack dab between both 4th and 11th Circuit Courts so being out of State waters is probably a plus for you right now, but it doesn’t get you a “get out of jail free pass.” Remember, RMS Titanic filed in the 4th circuit and their claim was upheld for a number of expeditions. The caveat to that however is the increasing international pressure on the US Courts to implement some of the UNESCO regulations on private sector salvage- which basically means ban them all. Although the UNESCO treaty has never officially been endorsed by the 20 nations required for ratification, some governments are taking it upon themselves to try and enforce them, illegally I might add.
So you see, it’s a minefield out there. And I ask myself the same questions as you and other salvors - “Why do I keep doing it?” Well the best answer I can think of right now is one I recently heard, it goes like this: Deep down inside I still feel the dream of a successful salvage and its adjunct of increased knowledge and sharing with the public of our maritime history through recovered artifacts handled in an archaeologically-responsible manner IS attainable! All you gotta do is keep believing it.
Oh wait… I know where I heard that- didn’t you just say it?
