As much as I dislike the thought of it, I’m beginning to come to the conclusion that many bona-fide and legitimate shipwreck salvors who have spent years playing by the rules and doing everything “by the book” have again become victims of a broken system that have made their profession appear criminal. It is not only near impossible in some places to obtain permits but even when a state sanctioned permit is obtained the federal government has been known to step in and take away the spoils to put in the hands of foreign nationals.
Not only does it appear that the government will not protect it’s own citizens in the corporate world but that they are actually the instrument of dissolution of that corporate entity. In plain words- our government has become the “Pirates” that many feared centuries ago. It’s no wonder that many salvors have gone “underground” with their operations and feel compelled not to discuss new finds or even their attempt to obtain legitimate permits.
If a permit is rejected, why should a salvor risk publicizing something that he now may feel he no longer wants attention focused on. In other words, if you can’t “un-find” a shipwreck, the less people that know about what you are now doing- or not doing, the better!
By taking away the private sectors right to legitimate historic shipwreck salvage and pursuing the insane theory of “preservation in situ,” our government is embarking on a plan of action that could no less be called- Provenance Genocide.
When will comon sense prevail ? |
