Hiya doin' Randy? That's an excellent question and one that a few of us have been scratching our heads over. The company certainly seems legit as one of the few who have gone public in their bid for shareholders. (Odyssey Marine being the most successful). But being relatively new their history is limited to only their PR hype, which everyone has noticed is a little much ‘out there’.
If their last effort is any indication of success to come it may not fare well for them. They purportedly attempted to salvage the El Salvador off of North Carolina but were shut down by Spain. The Carolinas are under jurisdiction of the 4th Circuit District Court which most salvors know ruled in favor of Spain in the Juno and la Galga cases off of Virginia.
Perhaps they have learned from their mistake and have now gone on to something a little more palatable here in the 11th Circuit where the issue of Spain’s jurisdiction still needs to be tested. All of their permits in the Sanctuary are in order and the Admiralty claim they are working under is the old Kirby group claim that evidently is still in affect.
So legally they seem to be squeaky clean- but I know what you are thinking my friend, we have both logged many hours sledding that area quite a few years ago looking for the 1622 fleet’s Patche’ ‘Bon Jesus’ without finding anything more significant than the anchor which was magged by Terry and Carla and worked on by Kane and your old Dauntless crew. Of course that’s not to say it’s the same anchor that they claim to have found- there’s lots of anchors out there from period shipwrecks. But we did cover a lotta ground didn’t we?
Let’s give these guys a little more than just the benefit of the doubt. They seem to be among the few left out there who have the courage to continue the search in the face of tremendous odds. (Sound familiar?). I think you’d agree, we need more courageous private sector salvors out there, not less, if our profession is to continue into the rest of this century.
Thanks for writing Randy, always good to hear from you. |
