Although on an environmental level it seems to make sense for governments to clean up their own mess. But on a bureaucratic level it means more government agencies to tax us on with little or nothing being accomplished.
One case in point is the USS Arizona in Hawaii. Our Parks Dept. has known that the ship contains tens of thousands of gallons of fuel that has been slowly leaking out into the harbor for decades. They also know perfectly well that the ship itself is deteriorating at a rapid rate of decline (another great tribute for in situ preservation). But instead of using our tax money wisely and remove the fuel, they are spending it on government marine archaeologist to dive on the ship, draw and take pictures of it, measure it and test their latest GPS technology to determine EXACTLY where the ship is located underwater. When this catastrophe finally occurs and there’s a huge oil slick around the Hawaiian Islands, the government will undoubtedly claim that they had no idea that something of this magnitude was possible and it was an act of God. (who by the way gave them plenty of warning)
As far as governments being culpable for pollutants being emitted from sunken warships of “vintage” pedigree is concerned and if the governments own history on this is any indication, it will most likely develop into another hypocritical regulation being introduced and bringing out the high powered attorneys trying to explain in legal speak why this new law DOES NOT apply to the Sunken Military Craft Act on historic ships because Spanish Conquistadors developed diarrhea as a result of Montezuma’s revenge. It was the heathens fault! So they are not responsible for their illegal DUMPING, or something just as absurd. |
