On Dec. 15th 2006, over a dozen years since Denis Trelewicz and Chuck Hayes discovered a 250-year-old shipwreck in the waters off of Key Largo, one of the cannons from that wreck was prominently unveiled in its new home at the Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center in Key Largo.
Denis Trelewicz, who was a self taught marine archaeologist, realized the significance to the history of the Florida Keys by re-tracing the last voyage of the English ship that carried those cannons. His relentless research here and abroad and his personal and financial sacrifices in order to bring to his community a glimpse of that past, was highly praised by Commander Dave Score of the FKNMS at the unveiling ceremonies and was met with loud applause by all who attended and knew Denis personally.
Denis Trelewicz passed away before he could see his dream come to fruition but he had set in motion the plan, at his own expense, to have this cannon serve the purpose for which he intended- To benefit all those he left behind with the knowledge that exploration and discovery are still our rights in the Florida Keys.
