insulated log vs whole log
Does anyone have any comments on the half logs, or insulated logs, vs. going with a whole log home? We like the ability to be able to use larger logs, and the hand hewn look, but not the expense of a whole log. thanks |

My experience in researching log home "kits" is that usually insulated log kit is more expensive then a milled log kit. And the installation of items such as electric and plumbing are easier. Dont know, on average, how much more a full log (12" +) package would cost. Kevin McD. |

Full logs (traditional look) will be cheaper to buy than other log systems but there are things to consider such as: What timber are the logs? Pine will be cheaper than western red cedar but will be more costly to maintain due to the higher moisture content that produces cracks and settling as the logs dry. Full logs are typically 15 - 25% more expensive to construct with due to the difficulty in handling and finishing. Time = Money. You really need to look at the full cost of construction, plus the cost of maintenance over the life of ownership, plus the variation of resale value to come up with 'real' value of a building system.
