is a 9-month MA program any good?

Hey all,

My pre-medicine advisor told me that being an MA is a great chance to have a *real* clinical experience while still in school and I was wondering how good a 9-month program is. If everything pans out, I'll take it at a Tech School (as opposed to a Community College).

Thanks for any info!

Yes, nothing wrong with a 9-month program! As long as it is accredited and qualifies you to sit for the certification exam. You can learn a lot in 9 months if the instructors and program is a good one.

Every experienced medical assistant here will agree... most of your learning REALLY starts on the job. It is through work that you learn the ropes. School will (only) give you the basics - but it is invaluable once you hit the job market.

I'm a full-time college student and I'm thinking about online schools? Are those a good idea? Hopefully there are a few accredited schools...

I agree with Danni. I graduated from a 2 semester program at the local JC and most of what I learned was after I graduated. I now have one year left before I get my BSN; so yes, having MA experience is a good stepping stone to going on further in the medical field. I am not sure about on--line classes though. I know you can get an administrative degree on line (receptionist type work) but how would you get the clinical? I suppose there might be an on-line course for the lecture portion, but it might be hard getting clinical time though an on-line course...if there are already schools in the area for MA programs would would have to be competing with them for clinical spots; and if they did exist you would probably get what is left over considering the other school probably have some type of seniority.
