I love the topic of this article "Is an open mic really an open mic?" however the article kinda ventured away from the topic and opened itself to more questions and trans of thought of what makes a poet a poet, rather then answer it's own question!
IS AN OPEN MIC REALLY AN OPEN MIC?
Is it?
With so many spokenword and slam shows going on across the country and more venues and poets are cashing the cash cow opening that they will win a spokenword contest or a slam to win the praise or the funds, regular open mics are loosing out in some areas and are being subjected to becoming "practice sessons for slam poets" in some areas.
Or, worse slams without the politics, but the popularity contest aspect of it are still attached. A poet named Val Jones onced touched upon one intersting fact within one of her poems when she said that the majority of the famous poets in American history have never slammed, and if so the majority of America would have never heard of them, because the majority of America isn't following the spokenword/slam scene. And, what does all of this have to do with rather open mics are considered open mics anymore?
Everything, because in my opinion most of them are becoming jr. slams in one for or another rather it be a cash prize attached to it or a popular kid poet who just happens to be in town or frequent the spot who comes in late after the sign up sheet is filled and bumps virgin poet or whomever from their spot, just so they can spit the same poem that they've been spitting for the last two or three years. Lol It's funny!
But, this is not true in all venues I've been to alot of fantastic venues where people actually love "POETRY" and the art of storytelling and they welcome everyone with open arms, hearts, and minds! In the future if this article is re-written or expanded I think it should include some qoutes from various venue host/or owners across the country, as well as poets both known and unknown, and audience members to get a clue view of the situation. So, that it becomes less about one poets opinion like mine and more of a well rounded article that will inform and inspire and invoke something within us all.
Nice read, I just wish it answered the question! |
