New to the area
Hi, My family will be moving to the Austin area in about 6-8 weeks. We have 5 kids ranging from 18 months to 5 years, and are looking for somewhere that we can spread out. We've found some very nice homes on an acre or two between Dripping Springs and Austin, but I'd like to find out a little more about the area before a house-hunting trip the week after next. I will be working at the Intel facility on Mo Pac just north of 290. What would the morning and evening commute be like from right about the county line on 290? How reliable is the groundwater supply, and how good is the water (taste and hardness)? Thanks in advance for any tips you can give me! |

Did you guys move down here yet? We are also new to the area. We moved here March 1st. My husband works at William Cannon and 290 West, so very similar to where you said you would be. It takes him 30 minutes to get to work from Henly (about 8 miles west of Dripping Springs), so I think it would be the same approx. for you. The water is hard, hard, hard! You will have a water softener, I'm sure. We are on a well. Being a city girl for the last 40 years, I'm freaked out at the thought of the well going dry. I'm constantly reminding my husband and stepson to shorten their showers and turn off the water when brushing their teeth, so we will have water all summer. My husband thinks I'm a hoot and just laughs at me. Good luck. If you need more information from a "newbie" with fresh opinions about the world out here, just send me an email. Thanks! Becky |

Hi Becky, We saw your reply to David's E-mail. My husband and I have been looking for a place in Dripping Springs. It sounds like you are concerned about the water their. I was kind of freaked out about the water when I was back there in May, but mostly because of the smell and the black stuff coming out of the faucets. We still really like the area and want to get back closer to family, but we come from an area with great water and that is a big concern of ours also. We just didn't think builders would be building where the water is drying out. My husband has been talking to some people out their and was told that they are talking about building a dam to help reslove some of the water issues. Have you heard anything about that. Other than that how do you like it out there? |

Try the 5 acre lots or a home in the Onion Creek Ranch neighborhood off Darden Hill Rd. This is Dripping Springs School District, the water is City Water here (LCRA). |

Hello. I'm not sure why I just now got your message since it looks like it was sent in January or February. I've had a hard time accessing your post, so there must be a glitch in the system. I will try to answer your questions, however. The commute from our house, in Henly (about 8miles west of Dripping Springs) is approximately 30 minutes to and from Oak Hill in the morning and evening for my husband. He drives to 290 and Wm. Cannon each day. There are more lights that will be coming our way though as the area is growing and we expect slower commutes in the future. We are on well water. From what I hear, anyone living west of the Stone Mountain facility in Drippin' must be on a well. I don't want to sound negative, but being a city girl originally from Arlington, TX, the water tastes horrible. There's tons of lime. You must have a filter system in your home and they come pretty much standard out here, I believe. You will make yourself crazy cleaning toilets due to the lime and rust stains. BUT, the good news is - it's beautiful out here and well worth the bad parts - traffic and bad water. The traffic's not too bad, yet, but will be some day. At least you will be prepared. The water leaves alot to be desired. I highly recommend a product called "Lemi-Shine" for your dishwasher. It's a miracle product, truly. Without it, my dishes were constantly dirty looking and getting etched. My dishwasher was getting ruined by the lime buildup on the heat coils in the bottom. This product is only currently found at H-E-B stores on the dishwasher detergent row. Albertson's and Super S quit carrying it for some reason. Good luck. Write me if you need more help. I'm at BeckyQuay@aol.com. Thanks, Becky |

Hey ya'll - the answer to water problems out here is to install a rainwater collection system instead of a well! You will run distilled water through your pipes: it tastes great and makes water heaters, dishwashers, clothes washers, etc. last practically forever. With any medium-to-large size roof and a storage tank (or two) you can store enough water to supply a family of four pretty easily (even in this drought, we still have water in our tank!) Check with the City of Austin Green Builder Dept. for names of experienced installers in our area. Good luck - you're moving to the best place in Texas! Laurel R. |
