I fear Jama is spinning. While it is true that there are more prospective parents than children, her arguments lacks insight. Fact #1- more children from the United States are adopted than from foreign countries. Fact #2- Jama doesn't tell you that despite these "long waiting lines" there are over 70,000 children who remain unadopted (if that is a word). Granted, these stats are deduced from foster care stats by state and government social service studies and do not take into account the age of the children inquestion. The fadt is, there is no hard emperical data on infant adoption statistics. I fail to believe that every infant in the United States is adopted and so couples have to adopt from foreign countries. That is just not true. There are factors that influence adoption that Jama is not taking into account. For example special needs children and infants of varying races and the rules and requirements regarding these. It is disingenous to believe that if abortion is outlawed and mothers are forced to have children that all of them will be adoptped. The numbers don't work out. Adoption is a viable alternative but it isn't the great solution that some militiant anti abortionists believe it to be. |
