Message:   Although I agree that part of the reason some of our children have behaviorial problems is because of the home environment, but the schools are pushing to put children on ritalin for everything. I look at the way children are being taught now and notice a big difference in how we were taught years ago.

Because the school system failed children for so long, a lot of their time is being spent teaching children how to TEST as oppose to how to retain information that will help them in their future endeavors. Another reason for a child's hyperactivity is the fact that everything around us has sped up which requires rapid thinking and movement. this speed process is attached to things they love and find enjoyment with and then we send our children to school where they are learning about everybody BUT themselves and it's a wonder why they're NOT interested in the lessons! According to history books, it seems like we only came into existence during slavery and the way we're taught, you'd think there were only 4 people in our entire race: Dr Martin Luther King jr., Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman and Malcolm X!

I was told by a teacher at my son's school that the children don't even have the same amount of free time to exert that pent up energy that they have from sitting quietly in a classroom for 6 hours a day! Some of us can't even sit still at work... and we know better! We need bathroom breaks, coffee breaks, cigarette breaks, breaks to stand around the water cooler and vent about not getting enough breaks so imagine how these poor children feel! Ritalin makes children exhibit drone-like personalities... that's not good for them either, so what do we do? I'm a firm believer that medication isn't the cure for everything. It helps schools because children who are put on these meds, can't perform "normally" in academic surroundings so it seems they need to be moved from mainstream classes and placed in a slower paced learning environment, which in itself is crazy because that follows you throughout your educational career. I always say, what did parents do with unruly children BEFORE the invention of this medications???

I think we need to stop relying so heavily on the school system to provide our children with the things they need to be well-rounded individuals and instill in them the values that are necessary to be productive members in society!
