Hello Everyone!
Just to start the board off, I would like to share an e-mail that was sent to me earlier today and it's reply. I do know that many of my own people (That's who I catch the most hell from!) can't stand the fact that there is someone out here who is not afraid to speak their mind and am not so caught up in making a profit that I will compromise my views and most importantly, my heritage. And while my site may not be extremely popular with someone who doesn't want to face the issues of blackness that we have on many topics, if you threaten to shut down someones site, why don't you start off with the millions of pornographic sites on the internet? Why don't you look to shut down the child pornography subscribers out here who are more of a threat than a black man who has the talent and ability to smash down the oppressors often publicized image of Black men as bumbling, lazy, violent and pleasure seeking animalistic non productive horny little dogs! You see, I do not fit in to what they want the world to see us as, so while I know that I have not detailed or credited who may have taken a photo on my "Our Lineage In Photos" page. It was painstakingly prepared by me to inspire, to motivate and to give you a reason to sit down with your children on the computer and maybe stimulate them to learn something about our struggles, our strength and what lies dormant within them! I would love to hear what you have to say on this but here is the letter in it's full form:

Your site is full of very informative concepts however
1. your images do not credit the photographers who took the photographs
2. your music selections do not credit the musicians, or composers
3. the web has copyright laws, rules and regulations that you may have to pay for in some instances
You may lose the right to your site or have it shut down by a host of different sources...
when you know better, you do better--dr. maya angelou and

My reply:
Thank you so much for your enlightenment! I shall credit those on that particular photo page on my website as much as possible. Most of the photos attained were available by a simple google search. It was a concern of mine as far as the legalities involved but I was told by my legal counsel that as long as I was not making a profit from the sale of the images, I would be okay. But the main goal was to inspire my beloved Black sisters and brothers in a way that is not usually found in the oppressive media.....when our short designated so called black history "month" arrives, so many of our freedom fighters are overlooked in favor of those that the slave master approves for us to honor. As an afrocentric minded independent editorial cartoonist, I have not or will not ever seek the approval of those that would never give me a platform for views that are contrary to theirs. Nor will I ever water down or alter my experiences to fit in to a system that uses their vast resources to paint my people as pimps, prostitutes and drug dealers etc. That is why the internet has been so good to me by leveling the playing field to where I don't even need to advertise! That is so wonderful! People know when something is good, when they do they forward it immediately as has been the case with my site. Now if someone feels good in attempting to shut my website down because of these laws, then so be it.....that page has already brought tens of thousands of viewers to my artwork and the rest of the site so the mission has been accomplished. If one takes a peek into my guestbook they will see the love that pours in daily and that doesn't even show the hundreds of e-mails that I receive on a daily basis in my box. Business wise, I couldn't ask for better. So the art, my writings and creative website design (all masterminded by me) cannot be touched because it has nothing to do with anyone else, my talents cannot be taken away as it was given by God above. And I thank you for that quote by Maya Angelou, because like Maya, I want to use my talent to rise my black people up to a God like mindset, but unlike Oprah, who often quotes a Maya Angelou who understands the struggle, I am catering to an entire different audience than Oprah's and have a completely different agenda as I will NEVER turn my back on my people. NEVER! |
