Message:   I completely understand about your outlook and experiences with the Army. I joined the Army after doing one year at a large University thinking I could get these great benefits and money to continue my schooling. I was a young man not wanting to return to the streets of Detroit because I knew death was certain for me. The Army was so attractive to me not having a real relationship with my absent father. I ended up having the Army be a replacement father. I served 10+ years and I even went hardcore with the 82nd and 101st Airborne Corps looking for the true essence of respect. The rumor back in the day was that most black men were cowards and didn't have the heart to jump from airplanes and repel from helicopters. I used that as a motivator. I went to war several times and I really felt that I finally would get that respect that a black man whom went all out should get. That was some str8 b-llsh-- nothing but a mere illusion. I found out I had done nothing but sold myself a d-mn dream. I really do understand you totally especially how the fellas can act sometimes because I use to act and hang out with a crew like that when I first joined the Army. The military has its upside but it can have some large downsides if you don't keep yourself well grounded and allow God to guide your heart. In all though I did get my education because the paid for my bachelors degree and now I'm in my 2nd year of law school with one left. I understand you and feel your pain. Hang in there and find out what the VA has available for you.
