Reach for the Stars

Reach for the stars I am told in a world that has limits
In a country that does not accept me even though I exist in it

To be considered equal, I have to be at least twice as good
Lest that hatred festers again and I am hung from the wood
Do not assume when I am seen that I seek to be like you
I am being the best of me which is my expertise in what I do
My race is part of who I am and not my whole being
Knowing the best of all of me is missed if that’s all one is seeing

Reach for the stars I am told in a world that has limits
In a country that does not accept me even though I exist in it

Do not tie my hands and then expect me to swim
My chances of survival are next to nothing and slim
If I refuse to drown and still some how get there
Affirmative action gets credit or social welfare
I was told as a child that troubles do not always last
The slave mentality is not just part of the past

Reach for the stars I am told in a world that has limits
In a country that does not accept me even though I exist in it

Is it a privilege for blacks to be mixed with other races
Better hair, lighter skin and more beauty in their faces
These are actual statements that I have heard said
Hearing it come from my brothers or sisters is what I dread
When God punished Miriam, her skin was turned white as snow
No representation of innocence, beauty or purity this we know

Reach for the stars I am told in a world that has limits
In a country that does not accept me even though I exist in it

Why can I not be angry and express myself
Without needing counseling or other kinds of help
Until things are really equal and this will be a long time
I will not hold my breath or anything of that kind
Society as a whole looks down on my race
Sometimes behind my back and sometimes in my face

Reach for the stars I am told in a world that has limits
In a country that does not accept me even though I exist in it
