Should we get 2 dogs or just the 1?

Hello,

We have the most gorgeous TT 6 month old puppy - he is a little star, very clever, loves to learn and incredibly affectionate! We have had him since he was 8 weeks old and we love him to bits!! But recently we were wondering about getting another one - he is so sociable and loves to play with other dogs - whenever we go for a walk he gets so excited if there is another friendly dog that he can run about with.
My fiance works from home so he isnt lonely during the day, but we are wondering whether getting another TT would be a good or bad idea!
So - if there is anybody out there with experience / advice to do with getting another or staying with just 1 please get back to me.... We would really welcome any information!!!!
We would only get another TT - we love them... they are the perfect dog!
THANK YOU
Lexie. x

Re: Should we get 2 dogs or just the 1?

I struggled with this dilemma for about 3 years after I got my first TT. He to was very sociable to the point where we sometimes struggled to get him back to us whilst out because he preferred to play with other dogs.

I got my second TT when my oldest was three and a half and have never looked back. It's wonderful to see them playing together and I no longer feel guilty about leaving them whilst I am working because they have each other for company. I have had to watch my oldest's weight because he has lost quite a lot in the last year due to all the extra running around he does now he has a pal.

I am glad however I waiting three years. My oldest is very strong willed and has been quite difficult to train but when he got to around two and half his ears seemed to unblock and he finally started to listen to me!

This has made it much easier with my second TT because from the very start she just followed him where ever he went and copied his behaviour. I can imagine that two very young, stubborn TTs may be a lot more difficult to train as they will get up to all sorts of mischief together! But perhaps people who have done this think differently.

I fully recommend having two TT's and although I would advise to leave it until one has grown up a bit, I wouldn't leave it for too long as you still want your older one to be playful for the new pup.

I suggest you make sure you play with your TT a lot which not only forms a strong bond but also keeps your TT young for as long as possible.

Hope this helps and good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Re: Should we get 2 dogs or just the 1?

Hi T&P,
Thanks so much for that - I hadnt thought about almost using Emmet (our TT) as a training tool for the new pup if we get one... so it would be worth waiting a while till Emmet is a better role model!
We do play loads with him - his favourite game is football - we take it to the park and he is away! Much better at it than me!!! They only problem happens when another dog is in sight.. in which case he is off, and sulks like crazy when we bring him back after a play! When I took him to visit my dad and his dog for a weekend, Emmet just followed him around the whole time, slept with him in his bed (much to the dismay of my dads dog who was 16 at the time and didnt welcome the crazy 5 month old!) and loved going for walks with him - we are so tempted to get another one, and your email certainly has made me think - especially about waiting a while... so if anyone has a different opinion it would definelty be worth hearing!
Thanks loads for responding - very helpful

Re: Should we get 2 dogs or just the 1?

I have to agree we got our boy TT 2 years ago. Then in April my partner started with the can we have another line. So we looked into resuce and then came our girl J. It is wonderful having two.

I was worried it would be loads of extra work but in fact its probably easier as they spend most of there time playing together instead of throwing toys at me to play. I also feel less worried about leaving them as they have each other for company and they get on so well. I understand that some dogs just never get on but if you introduce them correctly and make sure that one is allowed to get away with stuff whilst the other isnt it should all go well. I agree that the second is easier to train maybe its because you have already done it once but J seems to copy kyba making it easier for her to learn. Kyba has also played his part in her training as when she encounters something scary such as lorries or water etc he is there to show her its ok and theres nothing to be afraid of. He even taught her to swim by painskainly showing her over and over how to get in and getting her over her fear of water.

Re: Should we get 2 dogs or just the 1?

Hi,

It sounds likes Kyba and J get on really well - which seems to be the message I have received from most people... TT's love company!
We have decided to go ahead and look for another one and are currently on the waiting lists of two TT rescue centres. I guess now it's just a question of waiting and seeing!
Its so nice to hear positive stories where its all worked out!
I wish we could post pictures on here - it would be lovely to see your two!

Re: Should we get 2 dogs or just the 1?

My 9 month TT Harvey loves playing with my three Shih Tzus especially the youngest one Dougal. I would love to get another TT, but having five dogs would be pushing my luck at the moment. So I just have to make do with the four that Ive got.
