Hair Loss
I wondered if anyone could help me with our TT who is nearly nine months old. She is going through her messy stage with her hair and aswell as lots of matting she is also having big clumps of hair fall out. In places she looks to have bald patches with very short wirey hair growing. She has always been an obsessive scratcher and we have fed her food to keep her coat nice and conditioned. Is their hair loss always this dramatic or should we seek further advice?

In my opinion you ought to seek further advice as although TT's do scratch quite a lot this seems to be a bit excessive. My eldest TT started suffering with a skin compliant when he was about that age. He would scratch a lot and chew his feet or his tummy sometimes to the point that they bled. We visited the vets a number of times and they got us to try different foods to see if it was an allergy towards any ingredients in food such as gluten. After finding no allergy to food we were referred to a dermatologist in Huntingdon. This lady did a series of allergy tests against things like grass etc and my TT was eventually found to have an allergy to dust mites and storage mites. For the last two years my TT has been having an injection every 4 weeks to help control the allergy. There is no way I am going to avoid dust in my house! I also have to be careful giving him dried food as this is where storage mites are found. His allergy is now under control and although he will always be an itchy dog his skin and coat are in good condition and he seems much happier. Another product I have been recommended to use it something that Eczema sufferers use on their scalp. It's called Bettermouse but I think it is only available on prescription so you ought to ask your vet if they recommend you trying it. The first thing my vet recommended was piriton but I found that whilst on those tablets my TT had no energy at all. As I say I do recommend you consult your vet about your TT's skin problem as the itching does seem a bit excessive and do make sure you discuss any side effects to any treatment or medication they may recommend to you. Hope you manage to get to the bottom of your TT's problem and make life much more comfortable for it. |
