Puppy play biting

My new tibetan terrier puppy-12 weeks-bites alot during play and bites very hard, breaking the skin.
I have tried holding her mouth shut and saying off and no bite; I have tried gently grabbing the scruff of her neck also.
How long will this go on and anything else I can do?

Re: Puppy play biting

When my puppies did this I was told by a trainer to sqeal really loudly so the puppy knows that he has hurt me as that makes the puppy realise that it is wrong.

It worked for me. I have done this with both my TTs and to start with they continued to bite but not dig their teeth in as much but I continued to squeal and let them know they were hurting me and eventually they stopped doing it altogether.

Sorry can't remember how long it took but I suppose each puppy is different anyway.

Hope this helps

Re: Puppy play biting

Hello!
Oooooh I remember this stage very well!!! We have a 8 1/2month TT puppy and he is just about got through it!! Which, as yours is only 12 weeks, is probably not very good to hear!

Our little monkey would bite all the time - when playing - and it really hurt. We consistently said 'no biting' and left the room when he did it - which was VERY hard to maintain - BUT IT WORKED!

We tried making a high pitched noise but it didnt seem to stop him. Now when we say 'no biting' when he gets a bit excited during play, he starts to lick instead. Which although can be quite gross, its better than the pain of his needle sharp teeth!
Being consistent with whatever method you choose is what will get you through it.

I say ours is just about coming through the stage - but I guess it improved gradually since he was about 3/4months.

Good luck - it will end!!!!!! I felt like it wouldnt... but we are proof it does!!!

Re: Puppy play biting

Thanks for the info. Is this related to teething and how long do they teeth?
Also, any tips for how to handle post surgery recovery from spaying such an active pup?
We are planning to crate her alot during recovery as she likes her crate, anything else we can do to minimize problems with stitches.

Re: Puppy play biting

I have a 5 month old TT. He bit EVERYTHING when we first got him. My children could not walk through the door without the dog hanging off their clothes. He is MUCH better now. He will bite sometimes and still grabs scarves and skirts, he just can't resist, but it is better. We say "no bite" and sometimes use the squeal. I think he will completely grow out of this.
