Tibetan Terrier off lead
I have an 18 month old Tibetan Terrier ***** who is perfect in every way. The trouble we have with her is when she is off the lead on the field we have difficulty in getting her back. We have tried tempting her back with treats etc. Usually the only way we can get her back on her lead is when she is tired out, unfortunately this is becoming more of a problem as she decided to go home her self the other day! We now feel we cannot let her off her lead obviously for her own safety. It is such a shame as she loves playing around other dogs and running free. Please can anybody give me any advice. Thanks |

Have you tried training her on a long lead and calling her back to you whilst on the lead. Only call her once and if she ignores you drag the lead back to you, and when you have got her back give her lots of praise and a treat. Do not call her more than once before you drag her back as if you do you are teaching her to ignore you. Hopefully she should soon start to realise that it is in her best interest to come back to you. I know it is hard but you need to be patient and spend a while teaching her a recall on the lead before you let her off. When you do let her off again, do not keep calling her if she is ignoring you, just try calling her once and if she does not come try to get hold of her and put her back on the lead tell her she is naughty and try and ignore her for a bit. I may be quite hard for you now due to her age and the fact she has been ignoring you for a while so you will need to be patient. I had a similar problem with my older TT who is now five. I also tried running away from him or crouching down so it looks like I am further away than I am. I also used to play games with him when there was no other dogs around and hide behind trees, this started to make him pay more attention to where I was. I imagine you will need to be careful if you do this though as she may just not bother looking for you and go home without you!! My five year old is much much better now which could be down to age or may be down to the fact that a year ago I got him another TT to play with!! Hope this helps. |
