Two dogs now instead of one!!

Hi,

Well after looking for 6 months we have got a second TT - a one year old girl who is really tiny for a TT and very feisty! She joins our first TT, a male of 10 months, who is very laid back!

I was wondering how other people who got a second TT found this adjustment - and how their first TT found it?

Our first is very laid back and seems to have accepted the new girl, and although there is no aggression, they do tend to poke at each other and arent really friends! They chase about the house together, usually with one of them with a toy in their mouth! They play about during walks chasing each other - but when they are home they dont snuggle up and sleep with each other, which we would like, instead they sleep on seperate sofas... I was wondering how long people found it took, if at all, when their two dogs settled down with each other... and if anyone has found that their two dogs dont get on regardless of how long they have left it.

Thanks loads - any advise greatly appreciated.

Lexie.

Re: Two dogs now instead of one!!

It took my two about three weeks to get used to each other. My older one was nearly 4 when I got my pup so he had more issues and was quite jealous of the pup and was not happy when she came near me or played with his toys.

He never tried to really hurt her though just warn her off, I was still really worried to start with as I could not imagine having to give my pup up. They soon settled down though and now they are constantly playing. My older one very early on started looking out for pup and if we are out on a walk and she is not keeping up he will sit and wait for her making sure he can see me but also not letting her out of his site. Its very sweet how he looks after his little sis.

When they are playing they are always very close and often look like they are cuddling one another however when they are sleeping they always want there own space and very rarely cuddle up together. They are sometimes close when they are sat on the settee with me (I know they shouldn't be but how can you resist!) but I think that is more to do with trying to get close to me.

I think it is because Tibetans are quite independent dogs.

If your two have started chasing each other I think they have started to become friends already. Also because they are similar ages they will be competing for position to be the top dog. If you original TT is very quiet and laidback and your new one is quite feisty I would try and do something to even the balance a bit so the new one does not get too dominant and your 10 month get too quiet. You could do this by making sure to give your 10 month old his food first and when you come back into the house after a walk let him walk in ahead of her. Things like this will show the new girl where she fits in the pack.

It may seem a bit cruel but this is normal behaviour for dogs and I am sure they will settle well and become partners in crime very soon!

Hope you enjoy your new TT.

Re: Two dogs now instead of one!!

Hello,

Thank you for that advice - for the last couple of days I have been helping my first dog (Emmet) to feel more in control, so letting him eat first and go in and out through the dorr first and it has REALLY helped!

They seem to be enjoying each others company alot more now.. and are currently playing with a tennis ball in the kitchen together - but playing much more calmly and seem to be allowing each other to take the ball... rather than a frantic snarl and a grab from last week!!!!

Infact... last night I was amazed... I came downstairs and they were both on the sofa (I am the same.. cant resist them... so they are allowed the sofa, but they are not allowed upstairs!) and they were both lying down, and the new dog (Izzy) had her ehad on Emmets leg and they were fast asleep!

Things are definitly looking up!!!

Thank you for your reply - it was really helpful! I wish we could put pictures up on this forum.. would love to see everyones dogs!
