Separation Anxiety
Hi All, and thanks for a great site! Watson is 7 months and a typical TT for his age - energetic, delightful, naughty, that kind of thing - but one area we are having difficulties is separation anxiety. Hysterical howling and angry barking if we leave the house, or even if we leave him alone in a room. Any tips? Thanks Andrew and Louise |

Have you tried using one of the treat balls where you can hide treats inside. This keeps them occupied when you first leave them which supposingly is when they get the most distressed. My TTs also settled better after I started crate training them and although I do not now shut the door on their crate they still use it to sleep in as I think it gives them security. My TTs only now get separation anxiety when the see me leave so I always have to make sure I give them something to do like searching for treats. I know they do not bark when they have eaten their sweets as I have walked down the road and waited a while. They are also very energetic so I always make sure they have had a good run before I leave them. Some trainers also say that you should ignore them when you come in as well and only go and see them when they have quietened down. I did try this when my oldest was a pup and did have some success, the only trouble was I wanted to fuss him as much as he wanted the fuss so it did not work for long! I do think you have to be strong and persistent though as I did ignore them at night when they were screaming for me. I slept on the sofa for a couple of weeks so they could see me but I ignored them so they realised they would not get my attention by barking and I think this set the scene for the future so they have never had bad separation anxiety. Hope this helps |

Many thanks for these very sensible pieces of advice. We'll try them out and post again about progress. |
