puppy or rescue?
hi im looking to get a tibetan terrier i have a 5 year old sone and a 9 year old cat i was originally going to get one from a rescue but iv read in several places that a puppy would be better as i have a young child but as i have never owned a dog before im worried about training so im trying to do some research before i get one so any advice would be greatly apprieciated. thanks wendyanne xxxx |

Hi Wendy I agree that a puppy would be better as you can train him to your lifestyle. A rescue dog would be ok if you knew the history of his background and circunstances of his rehoming. Dont worry too much about training as Tibetans are easy to train and willing learners..most of the time haha!! Jill |

Hi, I know this thread is a little old but I have experience of both sides of this arguement. I thought if I left a message it would maybe help others in the future. I am owned by a TT Male (Kyba) who we got from a reputable breeder at 11 weeks and a TT girl (J) who have been with us for 2 months now who we adopted from a rescue. I can honestly say that J has been throught the mill she was abandoned on the street with a broken tail (so she cant curl it) and left to fend for herself at 6 months. she was taken in by the pound and then moved to a rescue. J is a lovely little dog though she is always happy and glad to see you. She is a little nervous when you shout so we as owners have adapted ourselves to this. Like many other dogs who you may get from a rescue she is nervous when there is a lot of dogs or people in one place. We have acknowledged this and have begun socialising her to these situations and she is overcoming this fear. socialisation has to be done whether you own a puppy or a rescue. She has never been agressive and is better around children than Kyba as she is calmer. Its like J wants to be good cause she doesnt want to leave so she seems easier to train than my TT Male. Kyba on the other hand is a typical boy if theres something more interesting to do he doesnt really want to know. I understand sometimes rescue dogs come with issues but they can be lovely dogs if your prepared to give them a chance. I still think that my puppy time with Kyba was harder than the socialisation with J. Kyba is a brilliant dog who is now very well trained but it was hard work until he was approx 14 months as he tested us all the way. Both puppies and rescue dogs are hard work so you must be prepaired for what you are taking on. In the long term however both can bring you many years of fun and happiness. My 2 make me laugh constantly and I am never far from a cuddle. I hope people will now think about giving a rescue a home sometimes all they want is love and affection and they are your friends for life.
