Tibetans & Cats

We're thinking about getting a TT puppy, but already have three cats (aged around 10). We were wondering if anyone has any advice about integrating the puppy into the household, and how TTs typically get on with cats. Thanks!

Re: Tibetans & Cats

Hi,
I have a similar problem - two cats aged 11 and 13.. and a puppy arriving on Thursday!! I have read a few different books about it and they all suggest that the cats will take control as they have lived here the longest. My fear is that my two cats came from the Cats Protection League after a horrible start to life.. as a result they are both timid and hide when anyone other than me and my husband come to the house! From the reading, we are going to introduce the puppy while he is in a crate - let the cats come to him when he is 'safely behind bars' and let them snif. We have also agreed to not let the puppy in our bedroom so the cats will always have somewhere 'safe and puppy free' to go, and the pup will sleep in an enclosed area until the cats are ok with him being here.
It is going to be hard - and I will keep you updated to any progress we make using this method! But I think it will be worth it.... once they all get along!!! But it will take a lot of time and patience.. the softly softly approach I think!
Hope this has been a little bit helpful!

Hi Lexie
Thanks for the info. We shall look forward to hearing how you get on with your Pup and Kitties. It'll be a couple of months till we get a Puppy, so any info will be gratefully received. Our cats are rescue too, although only one is still timid, the others are pretty assertive so we're less worried about them. Good Luck, hope all goes well for you on Thursday.

Re: Tibetans & Cats

Hi Claire, I have a 16 month old TT and an arthritic moggie aged 8 years. My TT had been surrounded by cats at the breeders and has shown nothing but friendship to my old grumpy assertive cat, who often swipes and hisses at him. They get on very well at feed time and tolerate each other the rest of the time. My TT wants to be friends but the cat wants to be in charge & the situation is similar to sibling rivalry. They play together and enjoy pouncing at each other from behing shrubs in the garden, they try and beat each other to their favourite spot on the sofa and chase each other about - nothing serious has ever happened & the play antics are amusing to watch!

TT's are very strong willed and extremely lovable, great fun, energetic......oh and a nightmare to groom! Mine is not particularly interested in dog food of any kind so be my advice on this is be tough and persevere if you have problems otherwise you may find yourself making extra portions of meat and veg for your TT (like me). He has a delicate stomach so I have learnt what he can and can't eat so that he doesn't get diahorrea or constipation and end up with an anal gland problem which is a TT trait apparently.

Anyway I have rambled on enough- good luck with your puupy, it will all work out!

Re: Tibetans & Cats

My beloved tt Max(who recently passed on) was wonderful with our cats and he was a two-year old rescue. Never a problem, he was always gentle and respectful with them. He was never aggressive. Granted, he was perfect, but introducing a puppy into a house with cats is easier than introducing an adult dog. You should have no real problems, just keep an eye on things. We are getting a new puppy in a month, and we can't wait, although nothing will replace Max.

My two rescue cats get on fine with my TT. They are the boss and Harvey (my TT) knows it!
