Moving to NOHO Arts

My girlfriend and I are moving to NoHo this coming week and we are very excited. We are coming from the Northern part of the valley (Porter Ranch). We love the NoHo area but some family and friends say it's unsafe. Is that true? From what we saw it looked great and that safety was not a big issue. So what's the deal?

Re: Moving to NOHO Arts

Hey Richie Rich,

I've been a NoHo resident all my life.(I'm 30 years old) I really don't understand this talk about North Hollywood not being a safe place. I've heard it many times before. I got married about a year ago and my wife, a former Burbank resident, absolutely loves it here. I personally can't recall any situations where i've felt unsafe. So nevermind what people say and welcome to the neighborhood. Besides are we really "safe" anywhere?

Re: Moving to NOHO Arts

Try living here since 1984. There are gang problems here in NOHO. Dont let all the fancy NO HO upgrades fool you. The gangs around here tend to roam the neighborhoods during the weekends. Usually graffiti will be all over the place after a good long weekend. IF you do move in NOHO, make sure you have a good parking space. There were times, in the past, where car windows were shattered and some cars were stripped. Also, get used to the airplane noise.

Re: Moving to NOHO Arts

Born in Burbank, I grew up in North Hollywood, moved around, came back, left for Sherman Oaks, and just a year ago moved back into the middle of the NoHo District. I loved it at first but...

A week or so ago I visited my family homestead in Iowa for the first time in years and all of a sudden realized how much I hate LA. I am having real desires to move there. Its a nice town with about 90,000 population, on a river, green with a major university and you can buy a four bedroom house in a neighborhood that looks like Pasadena for about $160K.

That being said NoHo is better now than it was a few years ago. There still is some crime and it goes up and down. There are gangs but a lot of the crappy housing is getting bulldozed. But they are there, they tagged my office last night as well as our neighbor's offices.

I think if I was going to live anywhere in LA and definitely the Valley it would have to be NoHo.

But I don't know if I want to even stay here.

Re: Moving to NOHO Arts

Michael H - glad you've decided to stay! Noho wouldn't be the same without you. Sooooo, Richie Rich, are you still here in Noho? How do you find it after six months? Does it still look great and are you feeling safe? It's a great location, I think. And it's certainly growing and cleaning up its act. Guess it depends on what you do. It's a handy place to live if you work in film or theater. I'm not sure, though, if you're, say, a gardener. Hope you check this post. Would love to know how you're getting on.

Re: Moving to NOHO Arts

I've attended police community meetings and the worst that seems to happen is breaking into cars to steal iPods.

Have lived here for 10 years and have never experienced crime.

My brother was worried about crime some years ago and moved to Colorado. What area? Columbine! Yep, the shootings took place not long after he moved there. So there ya go.

NoHo Arts District is for people who can't afford to live in Studio City or Sherman Oaks.

Good luck.

Re: Moving to NOHO Arts

Well, Tom. I hope you're enjoying life and a 6 figure salary. I like to think that NoHo is for artists, people who like to live life, dance in the fast lane whenever they can, and are more interested in people than money. But to each his own, c'est la vie.

Re: Moving to NOHO Arts

Shady groups of young men without shirts on hanging around every corner, countless streets of rundown houses and unkept lawns, coupled with the constant sounds of sirens and helicopters sure do make for an interesting place to live, to say the least.

Here are some stats on crime. Not very good:

But it's better than South Central, so at least there's that.

Re: Moving to NOHO Arts

My husband and I have lived here for almost 5 years, and it has it's ups and downs. I like that it's conveniently located to at lot of stuff - four freeways, two targets, four movie theaters, and you know, the second largest theatre district west of Broadway - so there's always something to do. I've also gotten involved with the community as well, as a member of the Jaycees, which provides lots of community service and social networking, so I'm kind of rooted here now.

I believe when you have a question about anything....you need to go to the source which is the LAPD regarding crime. I suggest you visit www.epolicing.org You can receive monthly crime maps as well as alerts and community updates.
