North Hollywood as it's Own City?
Several years ago, the Valley as a whole tried to secede from Los Angeles and just barely lost. Since then issues, needs, etc. have changed and here in North Hollywood a LOT has changed - much for the good, some for the bad, and I guess that depends on who you ask. The whole North Hollywood area is bigger than many cities in LA County i.e. Pasadena, Santa Monica, Glendale, etc. and bigger than many large cities in the US I would suspect. Should we be our own city as opposed to being a district of Los Angeles? If we had our own city, we'd have our own city council, parks, roads dept, cultural affairs dept, etc. We'd have our own elected representatives and not people who are from other neighborhoods (for example our Councilman Tom LaBonge is from Hancock Park; our very nice Assemblyman Paul Krekorian is from Burbank) and decisions about what condos are built, how the roads are repaired, how we fight crime, etc. would be made here right in North Hollywood and not Downtown LA. Would this be something that would appeal to you folks? |

That's a complex question. Yes, we'd have more control of local laws, local budgets, local politicians, etc. But how much would it cost? Would are taxes go to our own North Hollywood and be able to pay for police, roads, parks, etc? Or would we have to raise taxes? Are we getting money now from LA that we would stop getting? Has any organization done a report, a white paper, on the ramifications. Seems to me that's a very complex question with no easy answer.

We would need to do a study, but seeing how much LA wastes our tax dollars I believe that (as long as we could include Universal Studios as part of our city) a more efficient, local government could provide the same services (some of which would be outsourced like we could hire the LA Sheriff's to be our police department and trash could be handled by an outside company like many cities do) for the same or less money. North Hollywood would be bigger than many cities such as Pasadena, Santa Monica, etc. Definitely worth finding someone to study it. |
