Loosing our" Real Arts" in the NO HO Arts

We who have not only grown up in No Ho,are watching all the Real Art and fun loving charming stores dissapear and being replaced by more common comecial every day run of the mill food and clothing shops! What is going on here? We love the theaters, but what about all of those really cool vintage mom and pop shops that fall into the whole arts vibe? When all the really "Hip"vibey places start to go away then whats left except wall to wall high rise apartments. The whole reason people want to move here is because they are led to beleive that this is the home of the "Arts District", but after they find that all those wonderful places of food,, vintage shops and cool little mom and pop shops are gone, then all those folks that move in will soon be moving out of this area because they were miss led.Theaters are great,"But so are all the other artsie places that are being pushed out!Hope you put this blog up so we can all express how a great deal of us really feel! Thanks, Sue

Hey it really sucks, but hey you live near LA, what did you expect? Hey you might not care what I have to say (I'm a lot younger than you) but with my generation, we want new things. I think the problem is everyone from 18-30 (roughly) would rather have a new Grove than a mom and pop store so everything is either getting renovated or new things are being built. It's everywhere in LA... I appreciate some of the older art, I really do. But with new things comes new art, I guess. I can't talk for other people my own age, but they just don't care. If they did, some of these stores might not be gone.

Re: Loosing our" Real Arts" in the NO HO Arts

What's happening here in NoHo has been happening all over L.A. When ever an artsy or eclectic neigborhood with its own distinct characteristics pops up on the radar, the developers, chain stores, resturants etc. see investment opprotunities. They come in and build massive and very expensive apts. ,condos and retail stores. But since there's only a limited amount of land....many of the unique shops, older apt. buildings and cute bungalows homes have just gotta go.
So, then you're left with a more modern, upscale and expensive neighborhood that, I'm sure, will be a great place to live, but one that lacks the unique vibe and character that attracted us here in-the-first-place.
I hope that NoHo will (somehow) retain its distinct character and arts scene because I really, really do "like the neighborhood".

Hi Susan,

Thank you for your positive words. You are right on. Being upset takes too much energy, energy that not many of us have a lot of. We all feel the change. I encourage everyone interested in maintaining our Arts District to attend the Neighborhood Council meetings:

Sendak Elementary School
11414 Tiara Street
North Hollywood

Monthly North Hollywood Neigborhood Council meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month at same location @ 7PM.

Thanks for your positive outlook.

Haha I wasn't arguing, if I came off that way sorry... but yep times are changing... what's the rumor that Los Angeles is trying to get the olympics and will start a cleanup of the bad areas soon? What's that about?

Re: Loosing our" Real Arts" in the NO HO Arts

If NoHo is to remain an "arts district" it's up to us to not only create, but, partronize and appreciate LOCAL ART with all the passion in our hearts. I've been fighting for years to not see NoHo slip back into "Anytown USA." It takes work and constant vigilance... and a little cash now and then.

There will always be new shops. Thatcher used to say to her nation "Buy British." Let's say "BUY NOHO!"
Keep what few hip establishments we have left in business and more may arrive.

Paul

PS. Someone posted about the old Friday night sidewalk art shows we had a few years back. Those were the days when Eagles Coffee Pub was brewing rocket fuel and tough love via owner Starr. Anyone here remember the poetry readings at Sam's Books or The Iguana Cafe? The Spellbound witch shop? THOSE were the bohiemian frontier folk of NoHo... and oh, sister, does my heart ache for those memeories.

Re: Loosing our" Real Arts" in the NO HO Arts

Bravo, Paul!

I remember and deeply miss the great cappuccino from Eagles. I loved sitting outside sipping a "cap" and reading NoHoLA News and their music section. OK, also the horoscopes! ;) It brought me back to the days living overseas and living the happy and simple life.

I wasn't in the U.S. for the Friday night art shows but they sound absolutely wonderful. Would you elaborate please on the details? I'm sure the forum's positive folks would love to hear more. Also, why can't they can be done again? Whaddaya think? I know several theatres and other arts groups have stated that they would love to have more art in the district and more active visual arts presence. However, they don't know where to go or who to turn to. If there is a group of artists who would like to meet to discuss this idea, I would be happy to meet them and bring some other folks as well. I think we could make a fun afternoon of it and meet some really nice and positive people. It all starts with an idea and a group of like-minded and POSITIVE individuals who would like to get things done!!! It's really sad that some people don't understand that the more art genres there are in NoHo, the better it is for all. It actually sickens me. It's just plain ignorance and antiquated thinking. I just feel sorry for those folks. But hey, they can complain all they want. They will never get anything done being upset and bitter.

...On to positive ideas

Please tell us what it was like. Ya never know. There may be some positive folks out there who will get the chuspah (sp??) up to start something fun and semi-new.

Thanks for the positivity and proactivness.

Re: Loosing our" Real Arts" in the NO HO Arts

Paul is right. The free market works wonders. If you wish to keep any business in the area going, put your money where your mouth is. Shop there. Tell your friends.

And if these businesses are really good, lots of people will shop there and they will survive.

Those that don't, won't. We don't need the Neighborhood Council to keep them going. They have to do that themselves, with your help as a customer.

Re: Loosing our" Real Arts" in the NO HO Arts

A lot of us have recently found out why a lot of the really cool places like a vintage store called "Rag Time Cowboy and that martial arts place that had been teaching all the kids for the last twenty five years did not renew their lease because they always trusted the owner and when every one got really busy they they just waited as they always did in the past years
for that older gentleman to come as he always did with the new lease as always in the past."BUT LOW AND BEHOLD","Who

walks into all those businesses "Not the nice older Land lord,"But his younger, "GREEDY SONS" telling all those wonderful people like Joe at Rag Time Coy Boy and a few other GREAT shops that their lease was up and raised it to at least two to three thousand dollars more on top of what they were paying,This all took place when their father who was the Land Lord became ill. They were not only in shock but were really forced out by those outrageous prises. So sorry to see them go.Every one loved Joe and the Karate school who really were there teaching kids and women to learn to defend them selves in todays society and danger.Susie

Re: Loosing our" Real Arts" in the NO HO Arts

It's sad that landmark stores that have given service and character to north hollywood for so many years are being driven out by greedy landlords. But it's a market economy world and it will always be about the bottom line and making money. If things gotta change, things gotta change. But why does it have to be big chains that are the only stores that can make it in the brave new market world? Aren't there any other cities with nifty arts districts that have unique and individual, private owned shops that make money? Is it a sad fact that all of LA is just filled with valley girl shoppers, or do we not have sharp and innovative enough merchandisers? Isn't there anything that would work in NoHo other than Borders and Computer City?
