Memorial Day weekend has just passed and people’s thoughts turn to lemonade, swimming pools, barbecue, and . . . rodeo.
Summer customarily starts on Memorial Day and that’s when the rodeo season gets busy. Three Prairie Circuit Rodeos took place last weekend – rodeos in Tonganoxie, KS, Hinton, Oklahoma, and Claremore, Oklahoma. Abbyville, Kansas’ rodeo took place two weeks ago, and the first weekend in June will see rodeos in Bennington and Strong City, Kansas and Hugo, Oklahoma.
It’s early in the rodeo season. Hope runs high and cowboys aren’t too injured (yet.) Fuel prices weigh on everyone’s mind but spirits are good. Cowboys will compete at as many rodeos as they can get to. They aren’t limited just to the Prairie Circuit, although if they’re working towards the goal of qualifying for the Prairie Circuit Finals Rodeo, only points garnered at Prairie Circuit rodeos count.
The Prairie Circuit is made up of all pro rodeos in 3 states: Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma. There are about 55 rodeos in the 3 states. A lot of circuit cowboys are “weekend warriors.” They have a regular job and compete on weekends only. The circuit system was designed by the PRCA to serve those cowboys who want to be home more and don’t want to, or can’t, rodeo full time.
