Message:   I have been advertising my old Scorpion dinghy (for spares or repair)on the Scorpion website since early December. I was also invited to add it free of charge to the SailRacer website.

Recently I was contacted by e-mail by a potential buyer – who in rather 'confused' English wanted to buy 'my boat'- asking for photographs to be sent. He would arrange shipping from the south coast to Scotland.

I expressed surprise since the boat is in poor repair and hardly worth moving to Scotland, where I suspect there are similar 'boats' on offer.

He then offered me the full asking price £150 plus £30 to 'secure' the transaction!! but wanted to send me £2000, from which I should take my £180 and then forward the balance to his 'shipper' who would arrange collection of the goods.

I have two theories – one is that perhaps the £2000 is being laundered through obscure bank accounts the other is that if I accept his £2000 that I would be pressurised to forward the balance to his shipper before his cheque has cleared and that the cheque would then bounce.

Has anybody else had this experience? Is our safe haven of trust amongst fellow sailors going to be corrupted by scams such as this?
