Computer Problem
HELP! When trying to connect laptop to internet via wireless network, message says connected to wireless network OK, connection 54Mb/s, signal strength good, but cannot access any web pages. Can open internet explorer OK but message comes back - cannot display web page. My other computer works OK connected via ethernet lead to same wireless router (not using wireless connection). Any ideas? |

Jim...were you using a different router or modem before? If so...I think you need to remove the software for that first. Should work after that I think!! |

Always used the same router & modem, SF! To be honest, the wireless router hasn't really worked properly since we got it, but the message on the laptop usually says that it can't find a wireless network. This problem is different - says wireless connection is good. |

Jim had the same problem recently when I got my laptop repaired. U have to double click the wee icon on the toolbar that shows the signal strength then open the pop up box and connect to your main profile. If this disni work u have to go through your ip address via your main computer and set it up that way which in all honesty is a royal pain in the erse!! If you have to resort to this better just calling the wee computer shop in North street Leven (Cyber solutions) the guy in there talked me through it on the phone.

I take it you have tried rebooting? You mention that the router works fine with a connection via ethernet to your other computer. Have you tried a wired connection to this PC to kick start the connection and then try wireless after that? Finally...maybe a call to your IS provider could help get it sorted for you? Good luck Jim!! |

Hi Jim - it is usually something very simple when you get wee problems like that - some routers have a code on them somewhere which needs to be entered into the laptop before it will read the webpages - and when you unplug your modem the network settings in it are wiped, when you turn on, the ISP will assign the modem a new IP address, which will rebind the TCP protocols to the network layer - sometimes if the setup is not done in sequence may be worthwhile shutting it all down and work through the setup bit by bit With the specific web addresses that cannot be accessed, something has to be blocking it i.e. anti virus, firewall, router firewall blah blah blah. Try to find which is causing the blocking and then ALLOW or TRUST that specific address. Also check your contents filters, if you have a setting that is blocking popup menus uncheck it, as this may be sole reason you cannot get to certain sites. |

Jim, if you are still having problems try disabling your wireless security, I had problems with mine, if it works without the security you might have to change the type of encryption you are using for it. But remember to re-enable some sort of wireless security otherwise others can get access to your braodband or network. If you still have problems after you have tried all of the above drop me an email and I will come along and see if I can sort it out for you. |

Jim, You should try all these solutions and just hope that you don't lose any more than five weeks of the season. |

Try emptying your cashe. Delete cookies, temporary internet files and history. Very often its just a case of your memory being overloaded with gunk and you'd be surprised how this can restrict your web access. Start-control panel-internet options-delete above mentioned.

I had that problem. Means the wireless works - it's communicating with your modem ok but you're not connected to your provider. There's usually an an admin screen for your modem when you enter http://192.168.1.1/ into your internet browser. Your username and password are normally 'admin' and 'admin' till you change it. Once on that screen, you can enter your provider username password etc and hopefully connect to the net. That sorted it for me at least. Also, reset or reboot your modem/router before you do all that |

Thanks for your suggestions, guys, but nothing seems to have worked. I've tried re-installing, using different channel number, tried with and without encryption, clearing out cache, etc. The strange thing is that I get all different symptoms - one time the laptop will say it can see the wireless network but won't allow me to log in, other times it's the original problem where it says the signal's good and I'm connected but can't display a web page, other times it says there's no networks within range. Also, when I was re-installing the wireless system, occasionally I was told that the leads were'nt connected when they were. I think the only feasible answer is the wireless router's knackered! |

Jim,I`m no PC nerd but I had the same problem with my PC last week(wireless)and it was down to a security update from Microsoft. If affected those using Zonealarm firewall, which in turn stopped access to the Internet although it was showing network connection as being very good.Once Zonealarm found out about the problem they issued an updated version of the Firewall to download.Chek your area connection by Clicking start-control panel-internet connections and make sure your Local area connection is working....Don`t know what kinda of router you have but I can can re-set mine by sticking a pen or similar shatp oblect into the wee hole on the back. Good Luck |

A very big thank you to everyone who has replied to my appeal - and Southstander came up with the answer!! Tonight I removed Zonealarm from the computer, and - hey presto - I was able to get back on the web again! The only problem I now have is that I can't seem to re-install Zonealarm. Anyway, I'm sure I'll get around that problem. Thanks again everyone!!!!
