View From The Bay #35 ... (22/07/08)
View From The Bay #35 22/07/08 Well, this week’s ‘View’ is of course from Dundrum Bay as we got our own back on the ‘gypsy travellers’ by parking ourselves in Ireland for the weekend. I’ve no intention of dwelling for long on Irish stereotypes, it’s neither big nor clever. Well, just for a moment then. Yeah, so most of the women have ginger hair but we knew that anyway. And sure, most of them seemed to be pushing a pram with no evidence of the father whatsoever, but we have that here too. What was surprising though, and more than a little curious was just how many Irish women have only one eye. Strange but true. I suppose one theory would be that they’re the ones who didn’t fancy the oral sex and tried to get out of the way, but this is only speculation. *** Two Eugenes – now, there’s a scary thought. You can imagine it was co-incidence enough to find in the Loughgall Social Club a local fellow who, like our Mr Clarke, supports both East Fife and Stenhousemuir (though not necessarily in that order?). What was frankly unnerving though was when they were introduced to each other and it turned out that the Irish bloke also goes by the given name of Eugene. We left them to make each other’s acquaintance and from what I hear they sat correcting each others’ punctuation long into the Irish night. *** Visit Scotland’s tourist traps and you will of course be treated to the obligatory tack shops selling wee bagpipe-playing soldiers, foam-filled Nessies and shortbread in every shape imaginable. Well, maybe not in the shape of that thing that one female East Fife supporter was sucking her drink from in County Down, right enough. Anyway, Ireland is no different, and similar shops peddle similar tacky souvenirs most of which beg the question of just who would actually buy such things. I must admit though that there was one t-shirt on sale which brought a wry smile and which might have been handy for several of the East Fife players following the alleged shenanigans on the ferry home. Emblazoned across the chest was the simple slogan, “The leprechauns made me do it.” *** The draw has been made today for the Co-operative Insurance Cup 1st Round and, as always we’ll be facing Brechin City. That should make at least 8 games against them in about a year which isn’t bad considering we weren’t even in the same division as them for much of that time. Obviously, this will in fact increase to 10 games when we draw them in the Scottish Cup and draw 1-1 at Glebe Park before losing the replay at New Bayview. In other matches, Dick Campbell returns to Firhill where his Forfar side face Partick Thistle and there’s an all-Rovers tie with the ‘Wee Rovers’ playing against Albion at Coatbridge.
