Away From The Numbers

All good things come to an end. Or so they say. AFTN has been around since 1989, first as a fanzine and then making the jump to a website and forum in 2003. We've been through the many ups and down at East Fife in those 12 years but policing the forum has become a giant pain in the ass in recent years. As such, we made the decision not to renew it when it expired.

The forum is no more and will remain as a locked archive until it is eventually deleted by the host. We're looking in to try to save some of the content as an archive.

This is not the end of AFTN though. The site will continue and will be revamped and return in its full glory for the start of the 2016/17 season. Maybe even sooner. There will be a comment sections and possibly even a new, registered forum. Check our Twitter (@aftnwebsite) for all the latest info and we'll also post in on the EFFC memories Facebook page.

Until then, have a last browse here, thanks for all your support over the years, and 'Mon the Fife.

Bert Allan

Does anyone have any info on Bert Allan, believe he played in goal for East Fife @ 1957-1961 then went on to Stenny. Any info, stats or photo sources would be apreciated.

Re: Bert Allan

If you'd only posted before Saturday I was speaking to him at Lundin Golf Club. Bert will be at New Bayview in corp hospitality for the Raith game on the 7th altho heres hoping hes at the Dunfermline or Airdrie game.

Re: Bert Allan

Cheers, anybody with more info would be appreciated

Re: Bert Allan

From Jim C's Historian site...

A family friend, Robert Allan, played in goal for East Fife in the 1950's. Do you have any information? - Ian Morrison, Durham

'Bert' Allan signed for East Fife from St Andrews United in the late 1950's. He was given a free transfer at the end of the 1958/59 season, but after regular 'keeper McCluskey broke a finger against Cowdenbeath in the League Cup Quarter Final in September 1959 Bert was asked to return to Bayview and stayed for another two seasons.

He was a teacher at Aberhill Primaty too apparently

Re: Bert Allan

Bert Allan had three years with East Fife after signing from St Andrews United in 1957. Made 93 appearances for the Fife, ten of which were in the 'A' Division.
Yes, he did go on to play just two games for Stenhousemuir and also turned out for Crossgates Primrose.

Re: Bert Allan

'Big Bert' was the nickname he was given by his pupils at Aberhill. I was one of them and I did get the belt from him once or twice. He was quite a strict teacher, but when meeting him for the first time since school at Lundin Golf club about 3 years ago, he was a really nice chap and was pleased to be meeting an ex-pupil of his. He dug out an old picture of the class I was in and sent it to me. He said it was always a joy for him when ex-pupils remembered him as their teacher and he loved to talk about the school days with them and to find out how they had fared since school.

He married Miss Ratter, who was a music teacher at Kirkland (all the boys thought she was absolutely gorgeous), and is still married to her, (I'm sure he said that anyway)!

He also ran the school football team with Mr Walker. They were the two teachers that took the 11+ classes at Aberhill at that time.

The best place to contact him is probably at the golf club and if you are an ex-pupil he will be only too pleased to talk to you, I'm sure.

Re: Bert Allan

I remember Mr Allan at Aberhill but don't remember actually having him as a teacher. I did have Mr Walker as a teacher. My memory is that he had a moustache, was always immaculately dressed and was also very strict.
It's probably just a case that at that time at primary you didn't talk back to or disobey a teacher or you would get it either from them or your parents.

Re: Bert Allan

Before someone posts that Mr Allan and Mr Walker were a couple of *****, I'd like to point out that Mr Walker is my father. He's a regular at Bayview, and I will be warning him that whatever he put you through at Aberhill has not been forgotten!

Bert was Dad's best man, 50 years ago in April. Dad says East Fife manager Charlie McCaig gave Bert a Saturday off to attend the wedding. Not quite, says Bert ... try reminding your father that he got married on a Friday.

I have a good photograph of all the pupils and teachers at Aberhill, taken from above. It is dated 1957 or shortly afterwards. Email me if you want to see it.

I am in touch with Bert regularly. Drop me an email if you would like to get in touch with him.

Re: Bert Allan

Bert is a top man. Took me to a few Fife games as a kid when my Dad was away in America.

Re: Bert Allan

Im sure Bert was my maths teacher at Kirkland in the late 60's early 70's, he also used to take after school sports activities with Mr Ferguson the PE teacher IIRC.

Nobody messed about in his class as he had an air of authority, was a good teacher though. His nickname at Kirkland was not very ingraitiating though "Beadie Allen" because of the way he looked at you if you were being mishevious :)

Re: Bert Allan

I remember Bert Allan vaguely although I did not go to Aberhill Primary. I went to Aberhill Secondary and Kirkland and remember Miss Ratter and she was a looker from what I remember.

Re: Bert Allan

Is this the same Bert Allan that is a comedian and does the Sportsman Dinner circuit nowadays?

Re: Bert Allan

I wouldn't think so. I met him a few years back and he didn't strike me as having that sort of personality. Must be a good age now anyway.
Are you maybe thinking about the Buckhind High Gym teacher, who I'm pretty sure is called WILLIE Allan? He's been on the after dinner speaking circuit for several years.

Re: Bert Allan

No it's not Willie Allan, Bert Allan is a well known Fife comedian and after dinner speaker. He was in a panto in Dunfermline last year with Jim Leishman as the ugly sisters. I think I have puzzled it out now though. Bert Allan the ex-East Fife goalie subsequently played rugby with Howe of Fife. The Bert Allan who played in goal for Stenhousemuir is the comedian. Thus they are two different guys and the ex-East Fife keeper didn't play for Stenhousemuir. It seems Bert (the comic) was originally a miner from Steelend and was on Celtic's books briefly. Then he played with Crossgates Primrose, Stenhousemuir and Oakley United. It was the Stenhousemuir aspect that was confusing.

Re: Bert Allan

Guy`s, Guy`s.... I`m pretty sure you are all wrong. Didn`t Bert Allen have a butchers shop in Methil High Street during the 70`s and 80`s?

Re: Bert Allan

Think your right Tam.His pies were to die for, a lot better than anything you get nowadays.

Re: Bert Allan

Bert Allan is the x Fife keeper
Willie Allen is the after dinner speaker

both are members of Lundin Golf Club

Re: Bert Allan

Bert Allan is a comedian from Lochgelly, it was my understanding that he also played in goals for East Fife though I could be wrong

Re: Bert Allan

I was at Aberhill primary from around 1953-59 and remember Bert Allan as a teacher and EF goalkeeper.
I don't know anything of his whereabouts but the comedians and after dinner speakers are imposters and not who George is asking about.
Haven't seen or heard much from George so far this season.

Re: Bert Allan

The "comedian" Bert Allen is a different guy to the schoolteacher/ex EF goalie, although they share the same name.
I was at a dinner a couple of years ago, when Bert was doing his thing of going around the tables asking people for info, to try and get laughs.
He approached J Derrick Brown to ask where hw worked. "Fife Council " was the proud reply, "What as, a roundabout?" retorted Bert, to great laughter from the guests.
Unfortunately the rest of his act wasn't up to much.

Re: Bert Allan

I`m pretty sure some of you are getting totally confused here.
I`m convinced the Comedian you are referring to is actually Dave Allen. He came form Ireland and actually played a few games for East Fife as a Goalkeeper, but unfortunately an accident which led to the loss of his middle finger, prevented him from furthering his footballing career.
A chance gig at the Steelworks Club in Methil, where local friend of the stars Patsy Paterson, a person who had links to the media, recommended him to the BBC and subsequently resulted in a decent career for Dave as a Comedian on TV.

Re: Bert Allan

Ritchie

.

But the comedian is also the ex-Stenhousemuir goalie and the ex-EF goalie didn't play for Stenny.

Re: Bert Allan

Tam's story is a lot of urine but by coincidence I saw a cousin of Patsy's going into the game yesterday and volunteering to be searched by a muscular steward.
After being assured he did not need to remove his trousers Patsy's cousin clarified the situation by saying "it's ok, he lives next door to me"
