Gas Prices
WASHINGTON -- Some people have become so desperate to find cheaper fuel for their cars they've begun making ethanol at home. There are dozens of Web sites explaining how to make ethanol from homemade stills. Bill Sasher, owner of a Tennessee company that sells ethanol stills and kits, said that once you're set up it costs about 75 cents a gallon to brew your own fuel. Sasher said that with gas prices nationally closing in on $3 a gallon, his business is booming. ------- So I wonder if anyone around here has heard of this? This actually sounds pretty dangerous. I can picture people blowing up their garages as well as part of their neighbors home. Surely this can't be legal, can it?

Scout, I know you check this site from time to time. Maybe you can put this topic on the DallasNews site, since I still can't get on. Take a poll and see what people think regarding the making of their own fuel.

I'm not sure if I'm on board with operating a still. I would think that there are still a few laws banning that type of thing. Moonshining itself is still illegal, and I sure as hell wouldn't want the authorities thinking I had a meth lab or something. That and it would be a major fire danger. There's a reason we don't refine our own oil at home, I would guess that it'd be best to leave the ethanol to someone else as well. |

I am going to do a little research on this and I will get back with the results of my findings. |

Yes, it's illegal. If you go to the ATF website, you can find alot of information on ethanol. Even though it would be used for fuel, this is still considered to be alcohol. It is not at dangerous as a booze distillery or a meth lab, and can be put out with water, but it is still illegal. At lease I know my neighbors and I won't be doing this. |
