my savia tincture recipe

you need to get these items to start:

glass canning/mason jar
high proof drinkable alcohol (everclear)
coffee grinder
rectangular pyrex dish
coffee filters/clean t-shirt/nylon strainer
salvia leaf

you should have as much salvia leaf to start as you can get. however, you're limited by the size of your glass jar. try to get the largest one you can find, they're difficult to get nowadays. if you work in a restaurant, it might be easier. the huge jars that hold peppers and whatnot normally found at a pizza/sandwich place work well. as for getting the smell out, well, a mayonnaise jar might be better.

so, powder the salvia leaf with the grinder. tearing the leaves beforehand can save time. a larger grinder is better, but these things are usually small. this will take some time so get comfortable. also, use a dust mask. you should always do this when powdering anything, and you don't want green stuff oozing from your nose and sinus pressure for hours afterward, it's not worth it. dump all the powdered salvia leaf into the glass jar. you will use everclear or something stronger...alcohol is flammable, please be careful and don't smoke, sharpen knives, or anything else involving flame and sparks. now slowly pour the everclear into the jar with the salvia leaf. you want just enough to cover the leaf, and a little more besides, like 5-10% of the height. that's like a cook saying "just a pinch" i know, but you really just need a little more everclear after you cover the leaf. hard part is over, now the waiting game...

place the jar in a dark, cool place free of sparks and children, animals, congressmen, etc. i let this sit for a week, shaking for as long as possible twice a day. i would shake the bottle vigorously, and then roll the bottle around on its side. this was in order to get all the leaf back into the everclear and off the sides of the jar. you can let this sit for a while, but probably a couple days with lotsa shaking will work. when you have the time, you can move on to the messy stage...

if you let it sit for a week, probably the last couple days you can skip the shake. that way gravity helps you strain the leaf from the everclear, now a dark green color. you really don't want to spill any of the liquid because that's where the good stuff is. also, salvia dyes everything green. you need bleach to get it out, and that's after scrubbing. i used a lot of salvia so i didn't care so much about spilling the liquid so long as i didn't spill it on my clothes. you can use whatever you want to strain, but the point is to keep the powdered leaf/sediment out of your tincture. place the liquid in a smaller clean jar. use a dropper to measure doses, and keep in mind that this alcohol is very high proof so it can burn your mouth. dilute the tincture with water if you like. you can add a capful of mint extract to every oz of tincture to improve taste and sublingual absorption. brush your teeth and gums and use mouthwash before dosing. hold as much as you can in your mouth for 20 minutes without swallowing. if the effects are coming on strong then spit it out immediately if it's too much for you. keep the tincture in a dark place. use an opaque bottle if you can find one. clear bottles stored in a plastic bag in a pantry is fine.

be respectful of the lady at all times and she'll help you out immensely. later!

EVERCLEAR

Those who are over the age of 21 can email me re getting some Everclear -- they sell it here in Texas, and we might be able to work out some sort of deal? Be advised, it's a bit pricey...

Really? Everclear's pretty cheap here in Florida. Cheaper than mid-shelf vodka (Smirnoff, etc. Stuff of that quality.)

Re: my savia tincture recipe

Heya, questions!

How exactly do salvia tinctures work? How strong are the effect and how long would they last compared to salvia extract/quid? Any more info would also be appreciated :) thanks!

Re: my savia tincture recipe

Mmm, I used extract in everclear and it was extremely mild...I know the extract was good too... is there a trick to this?

Plus my buds were brave and tried it with me but the everclear was excruciating to hold in the mouth...I had burns for a week.

Re: my savia tincture recipe

In my own experience with high alcohol % tinctures, I found much relief from the burning if I took the tincture and dripped it onto a thin leaf like a banana leaf. Let it sit and allow the alcohol to flash off, presto! No pain and you've left the active ingredient behind on whatever you chose. You wouldn't want to pick anything so thin that it would soak through, but I think you get the idea.

Sounds like blotter paper may work well. By flash you mean let it evaporate, right?
