12hr race
Is it too early to start thinking about this race? I haven't run a 12 hr race before but I used to do endurance MTB racing in California in the mid 90s. Where can I find out more info on training for these type of events, and also, if anyone has any rookie tips, they will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Swanny |

OK, so no replies. I would really like to hear how some of you dealt with the logistics of the race. Support, breaks, what did you eat, etc. I am guessing I will burn 8-12k calories. Eating early seems to be key. I am hoping since this is pretty new in central Indiana, that we are all just doing our best and have no problem helping each other out. I am doing all base miles until March. In march I will start doing runs of over 2 hrs and then toward the end of March start some run/walk miles to get my legs used to the start and stop stress. ANyone have any input? Thanks and I am in Zionville if anyone wants to do some long slow miles together. Swanny |

12 hours is the max time limit for most 50 mile ultra marathons, so researching training for that distance would be a good start. I use Jeff Galloway's technique of run/walk, ie I run 3 minutes and walk 1. Ratios and duration can vary to what suits you best. You need to eat and drink early and often. I run only 3X a week, with a short run of 3 miles, a medium run of 5-7 miles, and then a longer run of 2-4 hours (usually 9-18 miles at my pace). the long run is the important one to practice what run/walk ratio works for you, as well as practicing eating and drinking. Unless you want it to be a horrible boring experience, I would not plan on surviving 12 hours on gel packs and gatorade. A lot of the ultra sites have good ideas on what foods work on long runs. Plan to walk while you eat- it is tough to run and eat. I try to eat/drink every 30-45 min, which works great with the 5k loop at Hawthorn. Try to do your long runs on trails rather than the road- it is less pounding. I weight train, walk, or bicycle 30 min on my non-running days. Hope this helps! If you are willing to drive down to Holliday Park or Town Run Park some Sat or Sunday morning at dawn (crappy weather days work best for me!), we could get in a slow long run 2-4 hours. Good luck, Marc Frost |

Marc, Thanks for the tips, I need to work on my run/walk. I have been all run so far. I travel most weekends, as a matter of fact, the race will be my next weekend off. Thank goodness for a supportive family. Swanny |
