grandfather clause for medical assistant (never went to school on the job trainging for 7 yrs)

Hello anyone....i need some help or to be pointed in the right direction. I have been working as a medical assistant for 7yrs now but i never went to school. all my training has been only on the job. Now my dilema is that i need to know about the grandfather clause because when i got hired into the practice im working for now i was considered grandfathered in but now they are telling me im not grandfathered in because of the new grandfather clause. I just want to read that clause for myself to get a better understaning of what is what. i really dont want to go to school for m.a. for the simple fact that i only want to do back office and all these classes include front office and i think that just a waste of time for me. pls help or if anyone has any ideas

thanks!!!

What state are you from? Because I know in the new California phlebotomy rules is something about this "grandfathering" not being allowed anymore. It might also apply to MAs there since in that state, any MA performing blood draws HAVE to get certified in phlebotomy.

Re: grandfather clause for medical assistant (never went to school on the job trainging for 7 yrs)

Actually, Curious, you are only partly correct. It depends on the location that you are drawing blood. If you are drawing blood in a hospital setting, or anywhere other than a doctors office you have to be certifed in phlebotomy. If you are working in a doctors office (with a doctor on site of course) you can draw blood as a regular MA.

I checked with the board.

Re: grandfather clause for medical assistant (never went to school on the job trainging for 7 yrs)

The AAMA permitted grandfathering for MA's until 1998. I understand you not wanting to go back to school; I am in a similar situation.

It is possible to get a NCMA credential (Nationally Certified Medical Assistant) from NCCT based on work experience; but I am not sure about the credibility of this credential. Do a websearch for NCCT. If anyone else has any experience with this, please let us know.

I went to school 25 years ago for CLA, certified laboratory assistant. However for the last 20 years I have been working in the back offices as a ma, however I do not have a certification. Could I take the test to become certified.?

I'm not sure if this is excepted by all employers or not but at my school we are taking the National Healthcareer Association Certification - I learned that you can get these certifications by work experience. I wouldn't of had to of gone to school, but that's ok. There web site is www.NHANOW.com.You can become certified as CCMA,CPT,CET. If anyone has any insite to this certification please let me know...I hope this helps

Re: grandfather clause for medical assistant (never went to school on the job trainging for 7 yrs)

I am in a similar position. I took the Medical Assisting courses at a local college in Indiana. I started working for my first physician as a student and was with him for nearly 10 years. I have been in my current position for 3 years. Once again I'm faced with finding work and I have no licensure. As I began working after finishing school in 1983 would I not be considered "Grandfathered in" and how would I go about getting licensed/certified. Any help the forum could provide would be very appreciated.

I'm in the Same position. Graduated in 2002 as a medical office assistant. Have been trained in almost all medical assistant jobs since then. I am not registered. What can I do?
