The Energy Release of the THRESHER Collapse Event Compared to MOAB, the Mother of All Bombs
The MOAB recently dropped in Afghanistan contained 18,700 pounds of unspecified high explosives.
The energy release of the THRESHER collapse event was equal to the explosion of 22,500 pounds of TNT at a depth of 2400-feet or 20 percent more than MOAB.
That energy came from the instantaneous conversion of potential energy (1070 psi sea pressure) to kinetic energy, the 2600 mph velocity of water entering the collapsing THRESHER pressure-hull.
