I live in England too.

I think it was equivalent to a banker's draft.

"When an individual requests a banker's draft they must immediately transfer the amount of the draft (plus any applicable fees and charges) from their own account to the bank's account."

In other words, a banker's draft can't bounce like a cheque could.
