Language question

Hello,

Right now I am wathing "Lovely but leathal". there is a scene there Columbo talks with secretary about smoking. and he says to her "I say to myself. Why does she take a chance". What does it mean? The google translator is usless here :) Take a chance of what?

Re: Language question

I think he means smoking is bad for you why would she do that to herself

Re: Language question

And of course he's meant to look really inconsistent when he asks for his cigar back right after saying that.
Which makes her give that little smile.
