Away From The Numbers

All good things come to an end. Or so they say. AFTN has been around since 1989, first as a fanzine and then making the jump to a website and forum in 2003. We've been through the many ups and down at East Fife in those 12 years but policing the forum has become a giant pain in the ass in recent years. As such, we made the decision not to renew it when it expired.

The forum is no more and will remain as a locked archive until it is eventually deleted by the host. We're looking in to try to save some of the content as an archive.

This is not the end of AFTN though. The site will continue and will be revamped and return in its full glory for the start of the 2016/17 season. Maybe even sooner. There will be a comment sections and possibly even a new, registered forum. Check our Twitter (@aftnwebsite) for all the latest info and we'll also post in on the EFFC memories Facebook page.

Until then, have a last browse here, thanks for all your support over the years, and 'Mon the Fife.

FFP - The 100 Greatest Sporting Fifers

In this week's Fife Free Press (only 52p KoTS) there is a 28 page supplement detailing "The 100 Greatest Sporting Fifers".
Of course not everyone will agree with all the choices, but there is a fair sprinkling of EF representation ( Allan Brown, Stevie Crawford, George Aitken, Jimmy Bonthrone, Wilie Johnstone, Andy Harrow). Also the 1938 cup winners are listed at no 3 in the top 10 teams selection ( behind no 2 RR Coca Cola, and no 1 Pars 68).

I wont spoil the list for those that want to read it for themselves, but unlike most other countdowns the FFP starts at No 1 and lists down to 100, so probably best to start at the back.

Re: FFP - The 100 Greatest Sporting Fifers

Is gatusso in it? He'd get my vote.

How can you even compare the Raith and Pars teams with the boys of '38?
I hope this is a Fife wide affair and not merely restricted to Linoland.

Re: FFP - The 100 Greatest Sporting Fifers

Top 10 Fifers in no particular order:

Charlie Fleming
Allan Brown
Sammy Stewart
George Aitken
Henry Morris
Willie Finlay
Willie Laird
Jimmy Philp
Davie Clarke
Tommy Adams

No Raith or Pars muppet even comes close to the achievements of the above. As for Cowden don't make me laugh. Ten out of ten to the Black and Gold.

Re: FFP - The 100 Greatest Sporting Fifers

On reflection Jim Baxter might make the bench.

So the only second division team to have won Scottish football's greatest prize is rated below a team who were given the league cup after a penalty kick shoot-out. The local learning difficulties in kirkcaldy must be more tragic than we were already aware of

Re: FFP - The 100 Greatest Sporting Fifers

Dunfermline's 1968 win actually pales in comparison to their 1961 success under Jock Stein who turned around a bunch of no-hopers with not much of a history into a club that became one of the country's best in the 1960's.

Neither of the Pars cup wins can be compared to the achievement of East Fife's 1938 success however. Indeed you could make an argument for the best Fife side as being the 1947-48 EF team who romped the second division and won the League Cup in a canter too. No other Fife team has won such a double or will do so again.

As for the great unwashed ones from Pratt Street, well that was won on penalties in a competition that had long since lost it's allure for the major clubs. They did well to win it (there I've said it) but come on, better than the '38 achievement? Some kind of joke surely.

If it was do you think Dunfermline would top the team poll?

And you saw this 1947/48 team play how many times?

No other Fife team has won such a double or will do so again.

Crass comment

In a competition that had long since lost it's allure for the major clubs.

Had it?Care to explain why?

Its probably the contrary as it was the last time a Scottish Club would qualify for Europe by wiinning that trophy

Also, the 100 greatest sporting Fifers Willie Johnstons hardly a Fifer,he was born in Glasgow

4-0 Doug, cos Raith won the cup unfairly on penalties.

In fact, as I was going bananas with the other 10,000 Raith fans at Ibrox, I was thinking how hollow the victory actually was.

I suppose you had to be there?

Have any of you actually been there?

Glad you made it along to Starks at the start of the season to see the routine dismantling of your team.

Re: FFP - The 100 Greatest Sporting Fifers

John Thomson died "playing" his sport he did not die "for it".

Semantics perhaps, but perhaps it is this attention to detail that makes me feel that the only team to win the Scottish Cup whilst outside the top division merits being considered greater than a team who won the Coca Cola Cup.

Also a club that has won four national trophies would, in most people's opinion be considered greater than a club that has only won one.

I haven't seen this list but would imagine that "the Prince of Goalkeepers" would merit inclusion for his legendary ability and achievements and not just his very tragic demise.

Re: FFP - The 100 Greatest Sporting Fifers

Jocky, in the absence of anyone ever coming out in support of your posts or claiming that you represent the silent majority, why do you persist in attacking those who don't hold your views? The evidence is that most of the time you antagonise other users of this messageboard with your attacks on them, they attack you back, and so it goes on. Why do you continue to do this, other than for your own personal satisfaction? I give up reading most threads when I see your name appear, because even if you have a point, you are unable to argue it. You turn interesting or entertaining threads about East Fife into childish personality clashes. Why do you feel you have to do this?

Would a club that's won 10 national trophies, be considered greater than a club that has only won 9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2 or 1? Obviously in most people's opinion?

"Greatness" is a difficult thing to measure. I'd say that a team from a town with a population of around 11,000 winning the Scottish Cup and 3 league cups is certainly more impressive than a side from a town of nearly 50,000 winning the league cup on penalties.

Don't get me wrong though, I'd trade many things to experience what you did, winning the Coca Cola cup, playing in Europe etc. I still wouldn't trade East Fife's cup winning history for it though, despite the fact that I wasn't around to see it.

You are happy to read posts from Fat Doug then with the comments like 'fanny' and 'homosexual' Supporter? I am afraid that you are targetting me simply because I happen to disagree with the vociferous minority on this forum that continually attack the club, the board, the players and anyone who dares disagreeing with them, like me!

The mere fact you are addressing your last post at me and not Fat Doug, proves that you are in agreement with him in his comments!

If he and his ilk continue to make comments that I don't like or agree with, then I will challenge them, sorry!

Re: FFP - The 100 Greatest Sporting Fifers

Part of the problem here is that you bring out the worst in people, but you refuse to accept your responsibility.
For what it's worth, I don't agree with Fat Doug's comments, but here you are, declaring that I do. On what evidence? On the evidence of some warped idea you have got into your own head and have decided it is a fact you want to share with everyone else on this forum. It's easy to see why people don't like you.

Re: FFP - The 100 Greatest Sporting Fifers

The fact is Cocky, that you always start by attacking someone's post, usually me or SPF's. You never give an opinion of your own on anything and that's what makes you a fairly pointless being on this forum. Most people don't agree with what I say but at least they have opinions.
Let's see if we can get something out of you by asking you 2 questions:

What do you make of East Fife's current frontline partnership??

What do you make of Fat Doug??

Good points. Now how about this one. If you consider that in terms of major trophies won East Fife rank as the 8th most successful team in Scottish football history where does that leave the Linos? A lot further down that's for sure but better than the likes of other comparable underachievers such as St Johnstone, Morton and Ayr Utd I suppose so credit where it's due I guess. But if you also throw in that stat about relative population size and measure that by trophies won we would be even further up that list. Useless prophesising I know but it puts our achievements into perspective and makes those of Raith and Dunfermline's pale even further in comparison.

I accept you may not agree with Fat Doug's comments, however you are defending him when he, as he often does when challenged, call me and others 'fannies' etc, as well as a few unsavoury descriptions of players. What is it that makes you want to defend that behaviour, Supporter? I don't challenge every one of FD's or SPF's comments, but I do if they are simply a load of crap, which unfortunately they often are! As for being the only poster on here who challenges either of them, that is simply not true!

For what it is worth, I agree with a lot of what SPF says actually. I didn't agree with him walking out at Starks Park and challenged the wisdom of him doing that, but if you care to check through all of his comments, which granted would be an absolutely MAMMOTH task, you won't see many posts from me!

On the other hand, I just can't see any sense at all in any of FD's posts actually! Check out why this all started, it was when he chose to comment about 4-1, effectively poo-hooing any posts in response by EF fans (before one was even made) to the ones from the Linos! Why didn't he criticise the Linos for posting on this EF fans forum!

Let's put this to rest please but remember that if you are prepared to post comments on here, then you have to be prepared to accept differing opinions!

Cheers!

Yes. This is true.

Edit to add: I know many East Fife fans and his hatred for Raith Rovers (along with his desire for East Fife FC to achieve something in the lower leagues - and constant frustration at us being unnecessarily pish and persistently badly-run for the best part of 25 years) is bigger than anyone I know - bar me of course !!! Re: FFP - The 100 Greatest Sporting Fifers

What's his attitude towards those EF fans like ??

I agree, and haven't commented by the way, that while it is a tear-enducing, beyond proud trophy haul that East Fife managed - and I am ridiculously proud of it, it is little consolation to keep saying 4-1, 4-1 (and nothing else) as we approach 3 divisions between East Fife and Raith. I've started ignoring Raith fans on here (mainly because they are probably right, that together with Gray blowing up in his (and our) collective pusses (as well as humiliating us 4-1 in the derby game) have every right to rip us.

4-1 in Cups doesn't cut it at the moment. I want to see East Fife achieve success in my lifetime - not much success, just be able to compete with the modern day Raith and Cowden (which we can't).

And I fucking HATE Raith Rovers.

As you keep dodging this, it's intriguing me now...

Get a grip lads, you are just two guys who are vastly over-opinionated and you have no right to be telling others what they decide they want to post on this site! Wise up!

That is quite unbelievable.

Tell me again then, if you will, why you decided to dust off the Jocky username recently, meaning, exactly why did you decide to post on the 'Score?' thread (starting all of this) ?

Ps, since you're taking shots at me, calling me this and that, you are indeed a fanny (like more than one person has alluded to above), but you're worse than that, your posts show you as a sycophant (there's not much worse).

SPF! Grow up son! You just can't handle any criticism, but you sure do like to dish it out!

You can't debate, grandad.
