JD and cast are in Mercer, WI at the Little Bohemian Inn (a resort that Dillenger used and had a little gun battle escaping). According to the news article, the set people have been up there for awhile re-doing the place to look EXACTLY as it did when Dilenger was there. It's roughly 3 hours north of Green Bay, but is very secluded, and the paper made absolutely sure that everyone understood it would be a CLOSED SET.
Oh, and fyi, Oshkosh figures they pulled in about 4 million dollars from the tourists and fans that came out for the shooting. I spent $23 (parking and lunch).
Does anyone seriously remember hearing about those kinds of crowds for anyone else's movie filmings? I don't.
Nic Cage filmed "Next" in our local mountains and I don't think there was anyone standing around screaming his name (except the director ). My brother lives up there and I think he saw some of the shooting, but no crowds.
I'd like to point out that you live in the region of Holyweird, where there is a movie being made every minute of the day. I think the entire population is a little jaded (since they're all trying to cop a part in anything). LOL
We Wisconsinites are a little green, so an actual Holyweird film being made here brings out everyone. And I mean everyone (some of the guys I seen standing around definately didn't look like they were interested in seeing Johnny). Although I did see 3 teenage boys dressed like news boys of the '30's hawking papers. I think they were hoping big time that they would be noticed and put on as extras. Their costumes were really good. Dam, should have gotten a picture.
Interestingly enough, the production chose the 74th anniversary to film the shootout at Little Bohemia. April 22, 1934 - a day that was sure FUBAR for the Bureau.
I wonder if it's a little creepy up there filming on the anniversary of those deaths.
Funny thing is, we saw a History Channel program on Little Bohemia way before there was anything going on with Public Enemies. And then when all this PE stuff did come to light, the little grey cells started sparking and I said, Wait a minute...
It's very interesting. I don't suppose they're going to have to do much to "restore" the place because they've kept a lot of the place the same. There's still even the bullet holes still in the windows from the big shoot-out and there's a museum set up in one of the buildings. Very fascinating stuff. They say Dillinger's loot was never found, but the owner of the Inn lived a very "comfortable" life the rest of his days.
In fact, now that I think about it, the whole program was on lost treasures and the mysteries that surrounded them.
There was a treasure hunting one where they used metal detectors to see if they could find "the suitcase of money that Dillenger supposedly buried" while running from the inept FBI.
Now, does it make sense that he would stop and take the time to "bury" something while the FBI are shooting up anything that moves. Not bloody likely.
Oh and from what I heard, the original Inn was dark painted logs, and they've since been lightened to nearly white. So, I know that they were repainting it. And ya, the original owner had a bunch of stuff left behind by Dillenger, and so he put up a small museum in/near the restaurant.
