Passing of CDR John Kubovchik, USN (Ret) - Former CO, RTF Dam Neck

Virginia Beach - Commander John F. Kubovchik, Jr. (US Navy-Retired), age 70, passed away peacefully at home in the presence of his family on July 20, 2011. He was born on July 19, 1941 to the late John and Mary Elizabeth Kubovchik, Sr. of Lakewood, OH. He retired from the United States Navy as a Commander and veteran of the Persian Gulf War after serving proudly for 32 years, mainly in the submarine force.
Upon retirement from the United States Navy John began his second career following his passion for music. He was instrumental in creating the band program for St. Gregory the Great Catholic School where he served as the band director for the last 12 years.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 45 years, Mary, his son, Michael, his daughter-in-law, Paula , his two grandchildren, Krista and Katarina, all of Virginia Beach; and his two sisters, Clare Kubovchik of Fairview Park, OH and Joanne DeMars of Colorado Springs, CO.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, July 24, from 6-8pm at the Altmeyer Funeral Home-Southside Chapel, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach. A mass of the resurrection will be held on Monday, July 25, at 10am at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Virginia Beach.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to the American Cancer Society of Hampton Roads-PO Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123.

I am sorry to hear of this. I enjoyed working for him while at RTF.

Very sad. I never knew him, but I remembered his name from my TDP school graduation certificate, and then I remember when he presented it to me. I was an E-4, he was a very gracious O-5.

My condolences to the family. I respected him very much as a leader and as a person, while I served in his command.
