A Celebration of Mothers Everywhere!
"Youth fades; love droops, the leaves of friendship fall; a mother's secret hope outlives them all."
- Oliver Wendell Holmes, physician and poet in 1908 to honor mothers.
In many parts of the world, women are identified as second or third class citizens. At times, they are shunned and even ostracized for things beyond their control, including infertility. Fortunately, we live in a society where we respect and honor those very special people we call mothers.
Mother's Day is traditionally celebrated in the United States of America on the second Sunday in May. Julia Ward Howe, famously known as the author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" first issued her Mother's Day Proclamation in 1870. However, she did not succeed in establishing this American holiday beyond the local level. Anna Jarvis, from Grafton, West Virginia created the current Mother's Day holiday in 1908. Many people, particularly people worshiping in church wear a red carnation or rose if their mother is still living. If one's mother is deceased, a white carnation or rose is worn.
To all of the mothers, fathers who had to step in to be the mother, step-mothers, God-mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, foster mothers and friends, from our hearts to yours, thank you and Happy Mother's Day! To everyone whose mother has passed away, let's continue to celebrate their memory and remember that we would not be here without them!
