final days of CV/CVA-59 USS Forrestal

I know we're mostly about SOSUS, subs, reminiscing, etc. But this sad Navy news caught my eye.

"WASHINGTON, Oct. 23 (UPI) -- The aircraft carrier USS Forrestal, out of service for 20 years, is being sold to a Brownsville, Texas, scrap company for a penny, the Navy says."

Many of us were on watch when the 1967 fire claimed 134 men. Seems somehow a bit disloyal, but I know every ship can't be saved But ONE CENT? One cent!!! I suspect some crooked millionaire politicians made out BIG on this deal.

Hell, the Brits Ark Royal was just sold to a scrap company in Izmir Turkey for less than $4.5 million.

Re: final days of CV/CVA-59 USS Forrestal

The "Q" in Argentia was dedicated as the "Strain Memorial Hall" after one of those lost in USS Forrestal. This was in the 1972 timeframe. I can't remember his rate or full name. He was most likely an aviation rate and NAVSTA personnel. If I remember right he was married to a Newfoundlander.
